Every year, the Texas Institute for Child & Family Wellbeing conducts the Child Care Market Rate Survey, a comprehensive statewide assessment that provides up-to-date data on childcare rates in Texas. The insights gained from this survey are instrumental for local workforce development boards in determining appropriate child care subsidy rates.

TXICFW partnered with the Ray Marshall Center for the Study of Human Resources to undertake the 2026 Texas Child Care Market Rate Survey, and the Texas Workforce Commission contracted the survey as part of an annual project. Read the report ➡ https://tinyurl.com/5fdyfazr

Spark alumni Rawan Albdeiri spoke on a panel to youth about pursuing higher education, overcoming fear, and making the most of the resources and opportunities available to them in college.

“Be ok with failure,” Albdeiri said. “I never thought success would be certain for me. Throughout elementary school, I failed most of my classes and constantly compared myself to the smart kid in the class. The truth is, success is just something that you put your mind to. Talent is something you work hard to achieve. All of us have a purpose, and there’s something unique to you and to who you are. There’s nobody on earth who is you. You can chase everything you want and create your own success.”

Tomi Choyce, McNair Scholar, researcher, and foster alum, served as the keynote speaker during Camp Longhorn 2026. During her talk with youth, she spoke about navigating life without a safety net or a traditional support system, and about her journey to pursue higher education after spending most of her childhood in foster care.

“No one could ever say I never tried to go to college because here’s proof, I tried,” Choyce said. “But then I started looking at the quote ‘do or do not, there is no try.’ I would tell myself: ‘This is do or do not, I’m past trying. This time, I’m doing it.’ How you talk to yourself and what you speak into your life is so important. This helped me visualize that I have tried, and because I tried, no one can say that I’m a failure.”

The UT Spark program concluded June with yet another successful teen camp. For more than a decade, Spark has brought dozens of foster youth to UT Austin for its annual Camp Longhorn conference. The camp gives students a chance to discover how to access and learn about resources to help them transition into adulthood successfully.
