With over 50 faculty and staff, and more than 150 courses each semester, the Department of Theatre and Dance is one of the largest theatre and dance departments in the United States. Our academic programs encompass various areas, including: acting; directing; dance; design; theatre for young audiences (dtyc); theatre history, performance studies, dramaturgy, literature and criticism (ppp); playwriting; theatre education; and theatre technology (costume, lighting, scene, and stage management). The department is dedicated to balancing high–quality production and performance work with rigorous academic study. The development of new work, scholarly articles, innovative design and a varied dance and theatre repertory is a high priority.

Assistant Professor of Practice Karen Maness has been selected as one of Alcalde's 2026 Texas Ten!

Nominated by UT alumni, this award recognizes Maness' impact as a faculty member in the UT Live Design and Production area and as Associate Director of Fabrication at Texas Performing Arts.

In addition to her mentorship of countless theatre artists, Maness also collaborated with the Art Director's Guild to archive historic Hollywood backdrops, making UT home to the most extensive educational collection of Hollywood movie backdrops in the world.

On June 8, 9 and 10, the department hosted its 17th annual Drama for Schools Summer Institute in the F. Loren Winship Drama Building.

Faculty, graduate students and alumni offered Austin ISD educators a deep dive into drama-based pedagogy—an educational approach that uses theatre and drama tools to teach a wide range of subjects in school.

B.F.A. in Acting student Katelyn Quintanilla is making the most of her summer, to say the least.

When classes ended, she continued her work as a producing intern for the Broadway Dallas High School Musical Theatre Awards before leaving for Florence, Italy to study sustainability in the fashion industry and oil painting.

She’ll return to Austin in July as a Teaching Artist Intern with Zach theatre.
