Looking back at Sissy at 100.

On October 1–2, we came together to celebrate what would have been Sissy Farenthold’s 100th birthday and reflect on her life, legacy, and lasting impact. The event brought together advocates across generations to revisit the issues Sissy cared deeply about and the work that continues today.

Through a documentary screening, a keynote by Skye Perryman of Democracy Forward, and conversations on democracy, nuclear disarmament, women’s healthcare, and protecting Texas beaches, we reflected on how Sissy’s legacy continues to shape these ongoing efforts.

Professor Beety of Indiana University Maurer School of Law will present her research on “Reproductive Wrongful Convictions: The Making of ‘Unfit’ Mothers,” examining how pregnancy-related events can be wrongly labeled as criminal acts and how women from marginalized communities are particularly vulnerable to these charges.

Jennifer E. Laurin, the George R. Killam, Jr. Chair of Criminal Law at the University of Texas School of Law, will serve as the respondent.

Please join us in celebrating what would have been Sissy Farenthold’s 100th birthday.

This two-day celebration at the University of Texas School of Law will honor Sissy Farenthold’s remarkable legacy of leadership and advocacy for reproductive justice, peace, and environmental justice.

The program will feature a film screening and talkback, a keynote address by Skye Perryman, President & CEO of Democracy Forward, and dialogues on peace and disarmament, reproductive justice, and environmental justice. We’ll also celebrate Sissy’s centennial with a birthday cake cutting.

Remembering Gloria Steinem (1934-2026): In 2013, we had the privilege of sitting down with Gloria Steinem and Sissy Farenthold (1926-2021). In their wide-ranging conversation with Amy Goodman, the long-time collaborators discussed their work in feminist political organizing. Here, they discuss Steinem’s role in Sissy’s Texas gubernatorial campaigns and Steinem’s nomination of Sissy to be the 1972 Democratic candidate for Vice President.
