Latino Studies at UT Austin The establishment of CMAS represents the institutional recognition that the Mexican American people are important in the history of the United States.

Born out of the activism of the civil rights movement, the Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) was established in June 1970, with Professor Américo Paredes as one of its principal founders and first director. CMAS engages in community outreach efforts throughout the academic year that include hosting various lecture series, organizing an extensive public programming calendar, and fostering a variety of community and research partnerships. We thank you for visiting our page and invite you to learn more about CMAS and Mexican American studies at The University of Texas at Austin.

❓ "What makes you feel safe?" 💙 That's the central question behind Michael Roy Hames García's UT-funded research study, the Austin Youth Safety Project. 📸🤝 He and local nonprofit partners have been working with teens this spring, asking them to take photographs that capture the people, places, and activities that help them feel safe.

The first phase of the project culminated in a 🖼️ public photo exhibition 🖼️ at La Peña Gallery in downtown Austin in May, featuring the work of 17 teens from local neighborhoods with some of the highest incarceration rates in the city.

Hames-García is testing whether intervention science can help prevent violence before it happens. ❤️‍🩹 If the data suggest the study helped youth feel empowered, the results could help guide community policymakers in providing more programming that helps stop violence before it starts. ✨

Hames García has a track record of bringing academic research into communities. 🏘️ "I wanted to make an impact locally, in Austin," he says. "I think this is especially important given the meaningful role a major research university like UT Austin can play in serving and strengthening the communities around it." 🤍

Michael Roy Hames García teaches MAS 308E: Police/Prisons/Inequality this Fall 2026. 🍂⏳ There's still time to sign up!

The Latino Research Institute proudly supported the next generation of academic leaders during our 9th annual summer institute for doctoral students last week!👨‍🎓👩‍🎓📖

Twenty distinguished scholars with various global backgrounds attended the LRI’s intensive Summer Doctoral Institute led by some of UT’s most respected faculty and researchers, including: Dr. Rachel V. González-Martin, Dr. Danielle Clealand, Dr. Nessette Falu, and Dr. Rubén Parra-Cardona. 👨‍🏫👩‍🏫📚

Throughout the week-long program, participants engaged deeply with intersectional research methodologies, analyzing conceptual development and critical inquiry, and benefitting from a wide range of professional development workshops. In addition to equipping these scholars with the skills to conduct innovative and rigorous research within their disciplines, the Institute consistently offers a transformative, affirming, and community-building experience.🔍💙

Known within academic and research circles as the Intersectional Qualitative Research Methods Institute for Doctoral Students (IQRMI-DS), the Summer Doctoral Institute continues to be a vital space for scholarly growth and connection. 📊 African immigrants who speak English well are twice as likely to be employed in the U.S., according to an upcoming paper by Drs. Lydia Okabe (African and African Diaspora Studies at UT Austin) and Hyacinth Udah (Social Work and Human Services, James Cook University, Queensland, Australia)

Key findings include:

🗣 Strong English proficiency improves employment outcomes regardless of other factors.

📈 Higher educational attainment, U.S. citizenship status, and longer residence in the U.S. are also associated with better employment opportunities.

🌍 Immigrants from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Congo reported both the lowest English proficiency and lowest employment rates among the countries examined.

📑 Researchers emphasize the need for more targeted language and socioeconomic integration programs for African immigrant communities.
