CSUB Liberal Studies

CSUB Liberal Studies The Liberal Studies degree requires a broad-based liberal arts experience.

Six of the Seven Liberal Studies emphases/tracks are designed to satisfy pre-teaching credential requirements. The coursework in these emphases has been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing as an Elementary Subject Matter (ESM) Preparation Program thus granting equivalence to the Multiple Subjects CSET Exam required to obtain a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential in the

State of California. The major also includes two Integrated Teacher Education Programs (ITEP): the IBEST (Multiple Subjects) and ISPED (Special Education) which allows students to complete credential programs as an undergraduate. Because the Liberal Studies teacher preparation emphases prepare students for a state licensed credential, requirements may be changed by state mandate at any time.

Aloha CSUB Runners!

We cordially invite you to celebrate Hawaiian History Month and learn about the significance of lei making, led by Dr. Kalani Heinz, an Assistant Professor of American Indian Studies at California State University, Northridge.

In her talk, titled No Maui mai au, akā noho au ma Kaleponi: Reflections on Lei Making as a Form of Hawaiian Survivance in the Diaspora, Dr. Heinz will share her research on how lei can transmit stories of Hawaiian survivance, as well as serve as a way of teaching material science.

Following the talk, you will have the opportunity to participate in a lei-making workshop. There are limited spots available, so be sure to RSVP! All slots are first come, first served. See attached flyer for QR code to RSVP!

We hope that you have had a great start to the new academic year. As we begin the fall semester, we would like to share several upcoming events and career resources available to CSUB students.

Fall Career Fairs

Career Counselor Appointments and Walk-Ins
• Students may schedule individual appointments to meet with a CECE Career Counselor through Handshake.
• Walk-in hours begin Wednesday, September 2, and will be available two days per week on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointment necessary. Please see the attached schedule.

CECE Video-on-Demand (VOD) Workshops
• Students may access recorded workshops on a variety of career development topics 24/7 on our YouTube channel or webpage. Please see the attached flyer.

Classroom Presentations:
• If you would like to request a CECE classroom presentation on our services and resources, resume development, interviewing, or other career development topics, please complete our Presentation Request Form.

CECE Location
• CECE is located in Entwood (Housing West). Watch our Instagram video for directions to our office.

I’ve attached our Fall Events, Walk-in Schedule, and CECE VOD Workshop flyers in both PDF and JPG formats. We will send individual updates as each event approaches. Students will receive information about these opportunities through Handshake, email, and CECE social media. However, any assistance you can provide in encouraging students to take advantage of these opportunities to enhance their career readiness is greatly appreciated.

Welcome Back, Roadrunners!

The Fall 2026 semester begins on Monday and the Liberal Studies team is excited to welcome you all to a new academic year! The first week of classes can be stressful, in order to ensure you have a great start, the Liberal Studies advisors will be conducting virtual and in-person walk-ins from Monday, August 24th to Wednesday, September 2nd to help with Fall 2026 semester schedule adjustments.

The last day to add classes is Wednesday, September 2nd. Walk-ins will be on a first come, first serve basis. Be sure to check your CSUB email for all the details!

Kern Tutoring is donating $25,000 over five years to CSUB to establish the Kern Tutoring Scholarship Endowment for Future Teachers, which will serve students who are pursuing a teaching credential at the university.

The scholarships, the first of which is expected to be awarded this fall, are intended to support first-generation college students from low-income households.

“What we are doing with this scholarship is really formalizing how we support student teachers,” said Kern Tutoring Founder and Executive Director Dr. Gustavo Luna. “If we can reduce the burden of expenses, even for one semester, that’s a win. That means they’re not as worried about their financial needs and they can really focus on being the best educator they can be.”
