Sydney Barrera (She/Her/Hers)

Hi everyone, my name is Sydney Barrera, and I am ecstatic to be a counselor trainee at CSUB’s University Counseling Training Clinic. I graduated from CSUB in 2023 with my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. I lived in the Philippines for six years before attending CSUB, where I witnessed firsthand the challenges of living in a developing country and the scarcity of accessible mental health resources. Witnessing the impact of mental health on individuals and communities inspired me to pursue my master’s in counseling. I want to create a safe and supportive environment where others can openly explore themselves and navigate life’s circumstances. While I lean towards a psychodynamic approach, I am open to integrating therapeutic orientations that would work best for my clients. In my free time, I like to read books, play games, and work on arts and crafts.

Hello everyone, I’m Airin Ochoa.
In 2023, I received my bachelor’s in psychology at CSUB and wanted to further my education by pursuing my master’s in counseling psychology. Now, as a trainee at UCTC, I plan to draw on my natural inclination for helping others by serving as a source of guidance and support for clients as they navigate challenges and flourish to their full potential.
Growing up in the Latinx community, I experienced how the topic of mental health was often avoided and treated as taboo. This ingrained cultural stigma leads to the underutilization of mental health services, creating barriers for individuals to access support and care they need. While working alongside my clients, I am committed to challenging stigmas and bridging gaps to promote healthier communities. Learning from my own mental health journey, I strive to advocate for and provide each diverse client with a safe, respectful, and supportive environment where they feel validated and empowered as they build their path toward resilience.
Outside of the clinic, I love spending quality time to connect with my family, friends, and pets. Some of my interests include working out, traveling, hiking, and listening to podcasts.

Hello everyone!
My name is Jorge Olvera (He/Him)
I graduated here at CSUB in 2024 with a degree in psychology. I first became interested in psychology back in high school when I took a course in psychology. At this time, I was going through a rough period in my life, so I found this subject to be extremely helpful.
I don’t have any specific populations I want to work with currently. I’m up for anything, but I do eventually want to start working with couples and maybe even specialize in them. I lean more towards a CBT approach, but I am open to trying out all approaches.
Some of my hobbies outside of the clinic include working out, collecting Funko pops, and gaming when I have the time!

Hello! My name is Marwah Alkorin (she/her/hers). I earned my bachelor's degree in Psychology, with a minor in Child, Adolescent, and Family Studies, from California State University, Bakersfield. My passion for mental health grew from recognizing how many individuals lack the support and tools needed to build resilience and navigate life’s challenges. As an Arab American, I am especially passionate about encouraging greater awareness and openness around mental health within my community, where its importance can be overlooked. I hope to help make mental health support feel more accessible and approachable.

In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors, reading, and spending time with my family!

"¡Hola!

Gabi Barbosa (she/her/hers)

Hi everyone! My name is Gabi. I was born and raised in San Diego. I graduated from San Diego State University in 2023, where I earned my Bachelor’s of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Counseling and Social Change. I moved to Bakersfield last year to begin this program and I am so grateful for the memories and opportunities that I have been lucky enough to experience since moving here!

I first became interested in counseling when I was a teenager. While attending therapy for my own mental health concerns, I realized how impactful it is to have a safe, nonjudgemental, and unbiased person in your corner. Due to the positive therapeutic experience I had during those years, I quickly realized that I wanted to be that safe space for others going through their own hardships.

Following my graduation from SDSU, I worked as a Residential Counselor for teenagers (ages 12-17) experiencing housing insecurities; this is an age group that I absolutely adored working with! However, as I continue learning and growing in this field, I hope to work with individuals of all ages and demographics.

On my free time, I enjoy reading, swimming, and spending quality time with loved ones.

Hi everyone! My name is Colby Capra (she/her), and I am so excited to introduce myself! I graduated from CSUB in 2024 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Sociology. Throughout my undergraduate experience, I realized my passion for mental health was rooted in more than just an interest in psychology. Growing up, I’ve witnessed the impact that mental health challenges, addiction, and life’s hardships can have not only on individuals, but on entire families. Those experiences taught me the importance of empathy, resilience, and simply having someone who listens without judgement. They inspired me to pursue counseling with the hope of creating a space where people feel genuinely seen, heard, and supported. I believe healing starts through connection, compassion, and community, and I hope to walk alongside others as they navigate life’s challenges and discover their own strengths.
As I continue my journey toward becoming a therapist, I hope to foster an environment where people feel empowered to ask for help, build meaningful relationships, and recognize that they don’t have to face life’s challenges alone. Outside of school and the clinic, you’ll most likely find me teaching yoga or practicing on my own mat. Yoga has become one of my favorite ways to cultivate mindfulness, connect with others in the community, and encourage self-care in everyday life. I value a holistic approach to wellness that honors the connection between the mind and body and encourages growth from the inside out. I also love spending time with family and friends, trying new coffee and matcha spots, being outdoors, traveling, and journaling. Whether I’m in a yoga studio or one day in a counseling office, my goal is the same: to help create welcoming spaces where people feel supported, connected, and encouraged to be their authentic selves.

Hello! My name is Erica Carranza (she/her/hers). I graduated from Bakersfield College in 2023 with my associate’s degree in psychology. I then earned my bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in religious studies from California State University, Bakersfield, in 2025. I was born and raised here in Bakersfield and spent a brief time living in Georgia.I have known since I was very young that I wanted to become a therapist, and that passion has continued to grow through both my personal and professional experiences. My work as a behavioral technician, along with volunteering in hospice and crisis intervention, has strengthened my desire to support people through life’s challenges. As I continue my training, I am excited to work with a variety of populations and continue learning. I value learning from a variety of therapeutic approaches and am especially interested in person-centered and psychodynamic perspectives, while also being open to tailoring my approach to each client's unique needs.Outside of the clinic, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our four children. I also love being outdoors, reading books about psychology, therapy, and history (with
a novel every now and then!), and recharging with meditation. I am excited for this next chapter and look forward to continued growth, both as a clinician and as a person.

Hello! My name is Vicki Fenton.
I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Studio Arts with a minor in Psychology from California State University, Bakersfield in 2012.
For over six years, I have had the privilege of working with children, adolescents, and families at Kern Behavioral Health and Recovery Services. This experience has strengthened my passion for counseling and reinforced the value of genuine connection, compassion, and meeting each person where they are. My interest in this work is also rooted in my own personal experience with therapy, which helped me navigate the complexities of growing up in a multicultural family with Taiwanese and Anglo-Celtic roots, better understand myself, and grow as a person.
My experience at KBHRS has inspired me to work with children and adolescents navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, and emotion regulation challenges. My background in both art and psychology has taught me to approach others with curiosity and an appreciation for the unique experiences that shape each person's story. I believe that a genuine therapeutic relationship is the foundation for healing and growth, and I strive to create a space where clients feel heard, supported, and accepted. I am passionate about helping clients better understand themselves, discover their strengths, and build the confidence to create meaningful and lasting change in their lives.
During my free time, I enjoy riding my horses, hiking, and expressing my creativity through painting and drawing. I also cherish spending time with family and close friends and caring for my rescue dogs and cats, who bring so much joy to my life.

Joshua Figueroa — He/Him

Hi! My name is Joshua Figueroa, and my pronouns are he/him. I graduated from California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) in 2021 with my bachelor's degree in psychology.

I decided to pursue becoming a therapist because I genuinely enjoy connecting with and helping others. My own life experiences also played a big part in choosing this path. I know what it feels like to go through difficult times and feel like there is no way out, and I want to help others through those moments. I hope to be someone who listens, understands, and reminds people that they do not have to face difficult times alone. I am interested in working with children and military families because I want to support them through the unique challenges they may face.

Outside of the clinic, I enjoy working on my Pontiac Trans Am WS6 and Harley, playing baseball, and hiking with my pups. I’m also always up for a random adventure! I love exploring new places, trying new foods, and learning new things.
