Our campus, the region and academia have suffered a grievous loss with the death of Dr. Kim Flachmann, who died Saturday at the age of 79.
When Dr. Flachmann joined Cal State Bakersfield, she was a part-time member of the faculty and developed the remedial English program. In 1977, she accepted the responsibility of leading the English Support Services in the Tutoring Center; three years later, she was hired full-time in the English Department. In 1986, she was named coordinator of the Writing Program, which helps students develop their writing skills.
During her remarkable 54-year career at CSUB, Dr. Flachmann stands alone as a champion for literacy and educational access, to the benefit of thousands of families in the Valley.
