Our first First Thursday! Black faculty and staff came by Village, shared advice, and shared lunch! It was a continuation of the engaging conversations at Welcome, Black Scholars! Professors Ayuk, Beavers, Hunter, Phillips, and Parks; counselor Hobbs; and A2MEND program manager Riggins came through! Gems included take notes by hand instead of taking pictures of the slides, go to the office hours of your professors, don’t take a break in your education, STEM fields can be rigorous but you can do it, don’t give up, take advantage of opportunities even if you’re scared, be yourself, and lean on your Umoja fam! We loved being in community!

Student Involvement Festival - we engaged with current and prospective Umoja students. India created a fun game with Black history and Umoja questions! Students won prizes too! And President Pfluger was there happy to meet students.

BC’s African American Initiative hosted an event to welcome our Black Scholars to campus. We had a great turnout! Our student panel of Mary, India, and Khalfani provided great insights and advice. Two students Mary and Madisyn won the ice breaker. Angela Williams provided guidance on financial aid and budgeting. Umoja (Professor Kei Ashby), Bakersfield College A2MEND Student Charter (Darius Riggins), and NASSSP BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE (Christina Contreras) presented on cultural resources. All Black faculty, staff, and admin contributed words of wisdom and support. Vikki Coffee made sure students knew BC’s call and response.
