Unfortunately, I do not have any phtos of Ted Bailey. In my experience, Ted was a quiet young man, but also fun loving and really seemed to enjoy being a member of Beta Tau.

There is a great story about Ted involving senior walk out, but I am sure Lyndle will discuss that on Saturday.

Addendum: This was wriiten before the ceremony in rememberance of our Five Friends and Brothers that died in the house fire 50 years ago.

For those that did not attend the ceremony, the story involving Ted was walk out my senior year when the seniors and freshmen take over the house and capture the sophomores and juniors and take them off campus fot them to return by whatever means available to them.

An exception was Ted, who we tied to the flag pole in the front of the house in his underwear and then pelted him with wet toilet paper. What we did not know was that was the weekend his grandfather decided to visit Ted. Ted greeted his grandfather as he approached the house still tied to the flag pole covered in toilet paper.

I never heard if his grandfather untied Ted but I assume he did.

I did not know Stuart McCoy as I did Harpo, Sloopy and Hadji. The first thing I remember about Stuart was he pledged in 1974 when we only got 2 pledges-Stuart and Lyndle Burton. We later added about 5 more (including Ted Bailey) but to say the least their pledgeship was challenging.

I always admired Stuart and Lyndle and the others that followed because it would have been real easy to depledge and join another fraternity that had more numbers as pledges. But they did not take the easy way out. A pearl of great price is not to be had for the asking.

Stuart was very involved in choir and the theater. I attended a ceremony a few years ago in the entry of Rice Auditorium and I believe there is a portrait of Stuart in the entry. I also understand there is a theater scholarship in his name.

I earlier posted the photo of our Homecoming skit in which Stuart played a cheerleader, which is reposted today.

The color photo is Steve "Porky" Parsons and Stuart getting ready to load up into the camper on Porky's truck for Spring Break to Padre Island.

The remaining photos are out of yearbooks that identify Stuart's participation in choir (in the blow up he is next to brother Kevin Heidrick, nice stache).

Of course Stuart is most closely remembered for alerting those in the House of the fire and calling the fire department. I suspect that will be addressed more fully on Saturday.

I have previously posted photos that had Steve "Hadji" Hoge in them including at Padre Island at Spring Break. I also posted this photo of Steve in the chair in my room on the 2nd floor of the "old" house.

Below are a couple of other photos of Hadji taken from yearbooks.

Steve was active in the school newspaper and yearbook. He had a dry sense of humor. Steve was very well respected by all members of the house and a definite leader.

Sometimes our sense of humor were not compatible. In the photo of the house where you see several of us with our clothes on backwards, since Steve was on the yearbook staff he felt we were being disrespectful. Therefore, you will not find him in that picture. He got over it and we all broke bread (i.e. had a cold brew) afterwards.

I spent Spring Break my senior year at Padre Island. We traveled in the pick-up truck and camper that was on the bed of the truck owned by the father of Steve ("Porky") Parsons. For reasons that escape me (I had totaled one car and nearly totaled another), the only 2 that were allowed to drive were Porky and me.

In the camper were Sloopy, I think Steve Hoge and Stuart McCoy. I don't think I was ever in the camper since I was either driving or riding sh***un, but I think it was probably a little ripe in there by the time we got to Padre.

Two of the photos show Sloopy, Steve, me and I think Ric Comstock. I can't make out the person.

We stayed in a condo that had a lot of issues. Sloopy is providing a visual opinion of the accommodations in the below photo.

One of my memories of that trip was going to the Mexican border town of Matamoros and drinking strawberry diaquiris in some dive bar with Sloopy. He loved strawberry diaquiris (and being a good brother I felt obligated to meet him drink for drink) and I am not sure how we made it back over the border.

There is another story involving Sloopy's love of strawberry diaquiris that I can tell if it is not otherwise mentioned at the memorial this weekend.

As an aside, ask Jim Hager about his adventure trying to hide a fifth of Mezcal walking across the border.

A couple of random photos of Sloopy. The first 2 were taken by Eric "Ike" Ikenberry. The first is Sloopy coming down the stairs from 3rd floor.

The second photo is Sloopy rockin' his white pimp suit talking on his antique style phone. I believe this was taken in his room on the 3rd floor. Only Sloopy and a couple of other guys had phones. Most of us had to use the pay phone onthe 2nd floor.

I recall one time I got a call from my girlfriend (now wife Lou Ann Harmless) and all she heard was "bun war" and me being attacked by several actives. If you do not know what a bun war was, ask an older alum.

But I digress. In the background of the last picture that was taken by Lou Ann, is Sloopy with Gayle Thompson.

Sloopy had many girl friends. He had a charming personality and could make anyone feel that he was their best friend. He also had an infectious laugh that just made you happy to be with him. When I think of Sloopy I just smile.

The photo below is Sloopy leaning on the trunk of my 1966 Mustang. Behind him is Harpo.

Sloopy was such a kind and considerate friend and brother. He was a brother who loved Beta Tau and promoted it with not only his words but also with his deeds.

When I graduated, I received in the mail a letter from Sloopy. This was a 4 page letter thanking me for my service as an active in the House. It was a beautiful letter that I still have today. I cannot think of any person or brother who would have written such a letter to a graduating senior.

Now before I put him up for sainthood, Sloopy also had a devilish side to him. He carried his camera with him taking photos of us. The first is an innocent picture of Rich Ehinger, me and Rick Comstock on campus.

The second is me on the crapper in the House. I remember he just had a great laugh and took off running. Not much I could do anyway in my position. And before you perverts comment on the photo, it was not a p***o magazine.

Below are some photos from yearbooks of David Sloop and some have Steve Hoge in them. As you can see, both worked on the school paper and yearbook.

"Sloopy" was a pledge my sophomore year and was part of a large pledge class that was quite diverse. Sloopy, though was literally a friend and brother to all of them.

I really got to know Sloopy my senior year as we both had rooms on the 3rd floor. Sloopy was quite the raconteur, so many nights I dragged my sleeping bag over to his room and we (including his roommate Steve Hoge) would talk about all sorts of subjects, including the pride he had in his home town of Independence, KS. I learned about Neewollah (Halloween spelled backwards) and William Inge (look him up).

After 50 years I can honestly say I have yet to meet anyone who was as nice and thoughtful as Sloopy. He is the one person that would spend time talking to our housemother, Gracie. Most of us just walked by her room, but Sloopy took the time to sit in her room and ask her about her home in Ottawa, KS.

Now Sloopy did like a good juicy piece of gossip. Since he was a friend to all, he was a good source of the latest campus "news". Sloopy was a great friend and brother in every way.

I can't find the commentary that I posted with this photo, so I will try and reconstruct it.

This is a photo of our Homecoming skit my junior year. I do not recall the subject other than I think it was a parody of the 1950's with jocks and "greasers".

From left to right is me, Harpo, Roger Driver, Clyde Tucker, Stuart McCoy (looking quite fetching in his cheerleading outfit), the intimidating Steve Hoge and Rich Ehinger.

My unbiased recollection is that we got the biggest reaction from the student body, but the faculty voted for the Zeta Chi's after a lame skit and lamer cheer.

The next year we just came on stage singing "we have noooo skit". Boy we showed them.

A few more random photos that include Harpo.

In the first several Eagle scouts got very patriotic at the Tri-Delt formal. I am holding the American flag and Harpo is holding the state of Kansas flag. Behind me is Alan ("Lunch Meat") Martin and I think Steve Eaton.

The two group photos are the 1975-1976 seniors that included Harpo.

The next photo is at the KC Zoo with Dave Banks, who we lost a number of years ago to cancer.

The last photo is me, Dave Banks, Eric Ikenberry and Harpo, again at the Tri-Delt formal.
