Meet: Theu

Theu came to the U.S. in March of 2019 and joined ELI then. Practicing English everyday has helped improve her skills since she did not know any before ELI. Theu enjoys learning how to write essays and also recently learned how to write an encyclopedia article! She will soon be applying to NDMU to study art therapy so that she may help others in the future.

“I really appreciate the teaching methods and the enthusiasm of the ELI teachers.”

Thank you, Theu!

Meet: Nga

Nga is a Sister from Vietnam, living in Baltimore. Before ELI, she did not know any English but now has daily conversations with many different people. She especially enjoys reading and writing. Nga hopes to study nursing in the future and use her new English skills to help others.

“ELI is a good way to learn the English language. If I know someone who wants to study English, I advise him/her to learn it at ELI.”

Congrats, Nga

This week, ELI is highlighting four of their students that recently completed our program! Each day we wanted to share some of the things they have learned and accomplished while at ELI.

Meet: Hoa

Since joining the program over a year ago, Hoa says that her favorite thing to do in ELI is learning conversation skills with her classmates. She also loved learning how to design wikipedia pages in class. After completing the program, Hoa wants to apply to NDMU and study nursing.

“ELI is a very good environment to learn English. You have the opportunity to exchange and learn more about the culture of international students.”

Thank you, Hoa!

Today ELI celebrates Dia de los Mu***os or Day of the Dead. This holiday is a two day festival where families create an ofrenda (offerings) to honor loved ones that have passed away. The ofrenda is adorned with marigolds, food, pictures of the departed, and calaveras. How will you celebrate this Mexican tradition?

Happy Halloween from ELI! Did you know that Halloween was originally started by the ancient Celts about 2,000 years ago in what is now Ireland and the northern United Kingdoms? It became the traditional trick-or-treating event that we know in the late 1800s when many Irish immigrants came to America. Share your favorite ELI Halloween memory by commenting below!
