A new MOU between UMBC, IMET, and AquaCon establishes a collaboration on developing land-based aquaculture in Maryland. AquaCon made this decision after meeting with Dr. Yonathan Zohar and touring the Aquaculture Research Center, seeing all the innovation that will help them as they build up a new aquaculture facility. An article on UMBC News explains this collaboration, as well as the importance of Silfra BioSystems, a company started by Dr. Zohar and Dr. Kevin Sowers, to manage fish waste in aquaculture, and an NSF grant to Dr. Zohar for research on fish reproduction.

“It’s a perfect storm in a good sense, because everything is falling in place now,” says Zohar. “I’ve been working in Maryland for almost 30 years, and we’ve been developing a lot of these technologies. Our mission is research, education, and economic development, and we have been working to create connections between academia and industry to fulfill that mission.”

Salmon Aquaculture Network Project Underway

IMET-UMBC Faculty and Director of ARC Dr. Yonathan Zohar is the lead P.I. on the Recirculating Aquaculture Salmon Network (RAS-N). RAS-N, which was awarded a $1.2 million grant, is a national public-private partnership that brings together many partners to build capacity for land-based Atlantic salmon aquaculture in the US. At the end of 2019, the group convened in Wisconsin for their first annual meeting. In February of this year, RAS-N organized a dedicated Salmon RAS session at the Aquaculture America 2020 conference in Honolulu, Hawaii, where several partners and others presented their progress. Baked bronzini fillets seasoned with lemon pepper, garlic and olive oil were on the menu for lunch at the Franciscan Center in Old Goucher on Monday.

The Mediterranean sea bass that was served is the result of aquaculture research taking place at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET) in the Inner Harbor, and was distributed to members of some of Baltimore's most underserved communities through a new program known as FISH.

The Feeding Individuals to Support Health Project is a public-private partnership spearheaded by United Way of Central Maryland, McCormick & Co., IMET, University of Maryland, Baltimore County and seafood wholesaler JJ McDonnell. The collaboration aims to provide residents of central Maryland with access to healthy, high quality sources of protein such as the bronzini.

It's an initiative that has been several years in the making, and if it is successful has the potential to scale to the rest of the state and beyond, said Franklyn Baker, CEO of United Way of Central Maryland.

Through the program, the bronzini that is sustainably grown and harvested at IMET is then taken to JJ McDonnell's facilities in Elkridge to be turned into filets and packaged. It is then sent out to partner nonprofits such as the Franciscan Center, Maryland Food Bank, Moveable Feast and other organizations with the ability to reach the underserved community directly. The idea is to continue to increase the number of partner organizations and eventually offer the fish frozen to be prepared at home as well.

Baker said it's useful to first provide the healthy source of protein through facilities such as the Franciscan Center so that community members can learn about its benefits, how to prepare the fish and even how they like it cooked — baked, grilled and with a variety of spices.

For Baker, a sprinkle of sea salt, a little pepper and of course, some butter, goes a long way.

Sparks-based McCormick & Co. (NYSE: MKC) is providing spices for the fish, as well as healthy recipes that use simple, inexpensive ingredients. Jason McCormick, a community relations manager, said the company's Flavor for Life campaign seeks to educate residents about how to make delicious and exciting meals that are also affordable and healthy.

The FISH program is the largest and most visible project the campaign has taken on so far in it's three-year lifetime, McCormick said. Over 10 years, McCormick & Co. plans to direct $2.5 million toward the campaign.

In central Maryland, more than 319,000 individuals are without access to healthy food, according to the United Way. And for those living with financial restrictions, the average individual receiving food stamps through the Maryland Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program gets just $30 per week.

While it is important for all individuals to eat well to prolong their lives and stay healthy, UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski said the need is especially great for children to help them perform better in school. Scientists at UMBC and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science are part of the 150 people at IMET working to develop environmentally sustainable methods for farming marine fish for commercial importance.

"Scientists care about people," Hrabowski said.

The research at IMET has been ongoing for 20 years, said Russell Hill, director and professor at the institute. Now that scientists have been successful in growing and harvesting fish in a sustainable way without releasing any pollution, they had to figure out what to do with it. The FISH program was an ideal candidate as researchers prepare for the next harvest cycle.

As early as December, scientists at IMET could begin harvesting and distributing shrimp in addition to the bronzini.

We are happy to announce the establishment of a new IMET Student Fellowship, which will fund one graduate student during their first year. The first recipient of this fellowship is Sakura Tanaka, who will join Dr. Yonathan Zohar’s lab next fall. Dr. Zohar is excited to be able to support Sakura’s studies, noting, “Funding graduate students has increasingly become a challenge and the IMET fellowship allows us to jumpstart a graduate student in their first year . . . Our mission is research, education, and economic development; we want to train the best graduate students.”

Sakura Tanaka is from Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan. She recently defended her Masters thesis in Aquaculture Life Science at Hokkaido University Graduate School of Fisheries. She conducted much of the research for her thesis at IMET, in the Zohar lab. Dr. Zohar said of Sakura, “She was able to learn complicated technology platforms quickly and she was very smart in designing her experiments. It’s natural that she would want to defend her masters in Japan and come back here for her Ph.D.” Sakura is also excited to return to IMET and responded to a couple questions regarding her research and career interests:

What research are you most excited about and why?

I want to understand the functions and interactions of reproduction-related neuropeptides, which are compounds of amino acids found in the brain. In vertebrates, we know that reproduction is driven by the brain-pituitary-gonad axis, in which internal and external cues are translated into hormone signals. Therefore, studying brain neuropeptides is vital to understanding the entire reproductive system of vertebrates. This has important applications in aquaculture because we would like to induce reproduction in some cases, such as for egg and juvenile production. In other cases, we would like to produce reproductively sterile fish, so that farmed fish do not carry the risk of interbreeding with wild stocks.

What are some of your career goals and how is IMET going to help you achieve those?

Through my Ph.D. research and my career, I aim to enable sustainable production of seafood via novel aquaculture technologies, while also preserving natural resources. I plan to apply my research to developing practical solutions in aquaculture. I am confident that the IMET faculty members and students will help me cultivate skills to conduct research and apply scientific knowledge to solving pressing problems concerning the environment and food availability. The combination of coursework, hands-on research under Dr. Zohar’s supervision, and a unique education in entrepreneurship at IMET will prepare me well for a career as an influential fish endocrinologist, helping to improve and advance global aquaculture. I am very grateful to receive the IMET Student Fellowship, which will help me achieve my academic and career goals by supporting my first year of studies.

Students Find Success As Entrepreneurs After REEF Program

At its core, the Ratcliffe Environmental Entrepreneur Fellowship is about giving graduate students options they never thought they had.

The REEF program at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology uses mentors and classroom lessons to teach science students how to think like business men and women.

Usually, the final product pitch marks the end of the year-long program, but even after just one year, something unexpected happened. Participating students were carrying the ideas they developed in REEF to outside pitch competitions. In the program’s four years, five of those ideas have been developed into real companies and this year alone, five students have won funding ranging from $1,000 to $25,000 for their companies.

“This is the next level,” said Nick Hammond, REEF Program Director and Associate Vice President of Innovation and Economic Development at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. “They’re taking what they learned in REEF and entering competitions to go beyond it. It’s nice to see them out there getting input and doing well.”

The REEF program has supported 21 students over the past four years. For eight weekends, students come IMET in Baltimore to learn from experts in the field. Lessons cover intellectual property, regulatory issues, marketing, manufacturing, budgeting and how to determine if an idea is commercially viable, financially feasible, and meaningful to society.

At the end of the program, the participating students pitch their business plan to a panel of local investors who serve as judges. Paul Silber, founding principal at Vienna-based Blu Venture Investors, has heard every pitch as a REEF judge from the beginning.

​ “It is no easy feat to prepare and deliver a 7-minute pitch to seasoned business people, but every one of the students succeeded in doing so,” he said.

The panel of judges would evaluate the quality of the CEO, specifically trying to assess their intelligence, creativity and technical prowess, and understanding of the market they would work within, Silber said. Students often show signs of many early-stage entrepreneurs, in that they lacked knowledge of essential business basics, such as how to identify customers and sell to them, he said.

“It is remarkable to see how the quality of the business plan presentations has evolved and progressed from year-to-year. This is a clear indication of how the REEF program is getting stronger over time,” Silber said. “I was exceptionally impressed by the enthusiastic presentations that I saw this year.” ​

Suzan Shahrestani, a graduate student at UMCES’ Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, started pitching her program idea, Minnowtech, to outside investors before she had even completed her first year in the REEF program.

Minnowtech is an application and phone attachment that, with the snap of a photo, will help anglers instantly measure and log their catch. Fish catch information will be shared with fisheries managers to improve assessments of fish populations and regulations.

Shahrestani and her partners won $25,000 from Accelerate Baltimore, a 13-week technology-focused program that offers funding, support and guidance for start-up companies. They had to compete against roughly 130 applicants for a chance to pitch Minnowtech for the funding. Her group will compete against the top 7 on June 19 with another pitch for a chance to win $100,000.

“I had this business idea that I’m really excited about. Just because I think it’s good doesn’t mean the world will think it’s good,” she said. “Getting into the Accelerate Baltimore program was a validation point for me. Other people like the idea and other people not only like it, but they’re willing to give you money for it. That’s pretty cool.”

Mary Larkin, an IMET/University of Maryland, Baltimore student, wanted her business to focus on the horseshoe crab because their commercially valuable blood helps test the safety of several biomedical products, including vaccines.

By the end of her time in the REEF program, she knew she wanted to keep developing the company she envisioned, Blueblood. Larkin and her partners, Jill Arnold and Brent Whitaker, recently won $20,000 participating in the Shore Hatchery Entrepreneurship Competition at Salisbury University.

Larkin felt REEF helped her perfect her pitch. Every month in the program, the students would practice talking about their business concepts in front of their fellow students, guest speakers, and Nick Hammond, she said.

“And every month that process got easier,” she said. “The mock pitch presentations at the end of the year were good preparation for real pitch competitions.”

Going forward, Larkin hopes the company can secure funding through other sources to conduct research that will allow her and her partners to grow their business.

Two of the students who won a spot in REEF’s top 3 this year have also had success since the program ended. Miranda Marvel, who developed Sensor Fish during REEF, won third place and $1,000 in the Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Kelsey Abernathy and fellow IMET student Dan Fucich won $1,000 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Grid Pitch for their startup, Urban Algae.

Marvel, an IMET/UMBC graduate student, appreciated hearing more positive feedback for her product. Sensor Fish is a diagnostic tool that uses colors to signify different stressors that might be affecting fish in home aquariums or pet stores tanks.

“Having encouragement and support from the entrepreneurship program at UMBC has given me the confidence to go ahead with more pitch competitions and try to hone my idea and begin to think about making a prototype and taking my business to the next step,” she said.

The funding she received will help her obtain lab supplies and materials to start conducting research and development so she can eventually create a product prototype. After a six-month review of her progress, she has a chance to win another $2,000, through the UMBC competition.

Once she has a prototype, Marvel said she will start looking for more investors and grant money to go forward with the company.

Abernathy, an IMET/UMB graduate student, stood out in the REEF program for pitching a rapid disease diagnostic test for aquaculture that uses the molecules found on cell surfaces that naturally act as detectors of viruses and bacteria.

With Fucich, an IMET/UMCES graduate student, Abernathy pitched Urban Algae, a biotech start up aimed at providing the public with a source of toxin-free algae for dietary supplements all while revitalizing urban spaces by retrofitting them with microalgal green roofs.

The team was thrilled to take their idea to the Grid Pitch finals and found a lot of encouragement and helpful feedback along the way.

“This competition is a bit of a crash-course of REEF, focusing primarily on the pitching element,” Fucich said. “They offered several information sessions and instructional seminars that participants could attend but the main element was the assigned mentor.”

They worked with the mentor for weeks leading up to the competition to gain feedback on their pitch’s format and content. With its own mentoring, REEF proved to be the ideal preparation for this competition.

“Pitching a company is very different from giving a scientific talk,” Abernathy said. “The REEF program did a great job teaching us the basics of a good pitch and required us to practice giving pitches to a variety of audiences. Over time, this built up our confidence and inspired us to try our skills outside of the REEF environment by entering a pitch competition.”

Abernathy and Fucich plan to enter more pitch competitions and submit applications for grants. This summer, they hope to do a pilot study and begin to prototype their bioreactor.

That students are finding success beyond the REEF program tells Hammond two things: one, that the program offers effective training, and two, that graduate students are willing and able to turn their training into businesses.

“Graduate students are a good source for leading innovation out of universities, and REEF is a small representation of Maryland’s graduate students,” he said. “We should be trying it everywhere.”

UMBC researchers win USDA grants to improve safety and efficiency of fish farming industry

Global demand for fish is growing quickly, but many species are already severely overfished, leaving scientists and industry experts searching for ways to more safely and efficiently farm fish. In response, two UMBC research teams are developing revolutionary innovations for off-shore fish farming, to help mitigate the risks of disease and escapes in captive fish populations. Both recently received extremely competitive awards from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to pursue their work further.

Yonathan Zohar, professor and chair of marine biotechnology, explains that the teams’ work “makes the point of how you can use advanced approaches and strategies of biotechnology to open some of the major bottlenecks in the aquaculture industry.”
