UMBC Summer & Winter Sessions

Every day we are confronted with images of scientists. These can range from news coverage of working scientists or commentaries by science promoters like Neil DeGrasse Tyson to the sometimes-menacing actions of wealthy technocrats and entrepreneurs like Elon Musk or Elizabeth Holmes. Or perhaps your image of the scientists comes from fiction, ranging from heroes like Doctor Who to supervillains like “Breaking Bad’s” diabolical Walter White (Heisenberg)? For over a century, these images have filled books, radio, television, movies, and now, of course, the internet, inspiring and worrying Americans all along the way.

Join us this summer as we explore (synchronously online) the history of science and technology in film and media. We will read science fiction classics like Frankenstein, watch televised coverage of the Apollo and Artemis space missions, and screen films like The Martian and Dune. There are no prerequisites, and all are welcome!
