The University of Maryland School of Medicine offers a Masters in Genetic Counseling Training Program for motivated individuals interested in becoming part of the expanding field of medical genetics. The program addresses the growing need for clinically oriented genetics professionals who understand the impact of the developing field of human genetics on individuals, families and the community. Th

e objective of our program is to train well-rounded master’s-level genetic counselors with a thorough understanding of the complex issues inherent in this field. Genetic counselors need to be able to educate lay people, medical professionals, as well as community groups. They require a solid background not only in all aspects of clinical genetics, but in laboratory and research techniques as well. The field of genetic counseling is rapidly changing, and it is essential for genetic counselors to understand the diverse roles they have in a wide range of clinical settings. Our clinically oriented program provides students with a strong foundation in medical genetics, while addressing the psychosocial and ethical aspects of genetic counseling. Diverse clinical rotations and laboratory experience throughout the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area are offered to give students a wide variety of experience. The Masters in Genetic Counseling Training Program is a full time two-year program that awards the professional degree of Masters in Genetic Counseling. Graduates are eligible for board certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and are well prepared to enter the job market.
