‘The point is to exist’: W. Paul Coates on his decades running Black Classic Press
HALETHORPE, Md. — The day W. Paul Coates stumbled on the book that led him to his calling, he was stationed outside Mineral Wells, Tex., working as a dog handler in the Army. He had joined up at age 17 and soon would be shipped off to Vietnam. After a tussle with an enlistee who taunted him with a racial slur, Coates went to another room to cool off. There, someone had left behind a copy of Richard Wright’s memoir “Black Boy.”

“Before that, I would read the Russian classics, I would read the French classics, and I particularly loved American colonial historical fiction,” Coates said. Wright’s memoir changed everything: “Once I recognized there was a body of books, a genre, devoted to Black subjects and life — it opened up a different world to me.”

Coates, 78, has been devoted to Black literature ever since — not only as a reader but as the founder of Black Classic Press, which for nearly half a century has been dedicated to reviving out-of-print books. His lifetime of work is being recognized this fall with the Literarian Award, presented by the National Book Foundation for outstanding service to the literary community. The honor will be presented to Coates on Nov. 20 at the National Book Awards ceremony in New York.
