We are thrilled to announce that Man-San Ma, MScBMC, has joined our fulltime faculty as an Instructor in the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine. An award-winning medical illustrator and creative leader, Man-San brings a blend of artistry, scientific knowledge, and technological fluency to our world-renowned department and medical and biological illustration graduate program. Her experience and insight represent an exciting step forward for our department as we shape the evolution of our unique field. Man-San champions collaboration, experimentation, and mentorship, drawing on years of experience leading interdisciplinary teams of artists, scientists, and developers. In her faculty role she will help shape our curriculum in the areas of emerging media and interactive visualization.
Man-San is a talented visual communicator who earned her BSc in Environmental Sciences from the University of Guelph and her Master of Science in Biomedical Communication from the University of Toronto. Over the past decade, she has collaborated with experts in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries and academic institutions. Her work ranges from producing 2D patient-education animations to designing immersive VR training modules that help surgeons perform complex procedures and improve patient outcomes.

Man-San has received numerous awards from the Association of Medical Illustrators, including individual awards and as a contributor to team projects with her previous employer, AXS Studio. As Project Lead and Senior 3D Artist at Osso VR, she helped develop a surgical training platform named one of TIME Magazine’s Best Inventions of 2022.

Driven by a passion for equipping students with creativity and adaptability to thrive in an ever-changing field, Man-San joins us as we lead our profession through new realities shaped by AI, emerging media, and global shifts in science communication. Throwback to our Spring Student Exchange with the Medical Illustration program at Augusta University! Our students and faculty spent a weekend learning from insightful guest speakers, collaborating on team projects, and connecting with peers, professionals, and alumni in the medical illustration community.

Beyond the exchange, we had the chance to explore, from visiting Phinizy Swamp and Congaree National Park to enjoying some classic southern BBQ. A heartfelt thank you to our friends and colleagues at Augusta University for hosting such a phenomenal exchange—we’re already looking forward to next spring!

This past spring, we held a celebration of life to honor Art as Applied to Medicine Director Emeritus Gary P. Lees for the incredible impact he has had on generations of students and the field of medical illustration. We’re grateful to Hopkins alumni, faculty, and friends who returned to share their memories, and to all who spoke so meaningfully about the ways Gary influenced their lives. Hopkins alumni also visited the studio and spent time with current students, continuing the kind of dialogue and connection that Gary always fostered.

A second memorial will be held during this year’s AMI conference on July 18th, from 5:30 to 6:30 PM, presented by Johns Hopkins University. We look forward to coming together again to remember, reflect, and honor the legacy Gary leaves behind.
