The Road to COP27: Climate Change and Health Through Three Lenses

October 15, 2021
11:00am-3:00pm EST

Countless reports have warned us of the existential threat climate change poses to all of us. The latest August IPCC Report showed that the last time atmospheric CO2 levels were this high was millions of years ago. Worldwide, we are seeing another year of lethal wildfires, water crises and extreme weather conditions.

The central challenge now is to mobilize political will across sectors and internationally to scale up known, effective solutions that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate against the effects of climate change. This symposium, The Road to COP27: Climate Change and Health Through Three Lenses, will include presentations from experts from around the world who will share high-impact solutions that will address climate change and improve health outcomes. Leaders from the African continent will share what should be in the COP27 meeting in Africa in 2022.

Attendees will be able to provide suggestions and ask questions. Solutions from this symposium will be shared publicly and with policymakers including at the COP26 meeting in Glasgow in an open-access document.

CUGH Webinar: Oral Health- Solutions to Address this Neglected Global Health Challenge

October 28, 2021
8:00am-9:00am EST

Oral health diseases affect over 3.5 Billion people globally. From dental caries to oral cancer, many of these diseases are preventable or treatable if found early in their progress. Despite this, coverage for oral health is usually not part of UHC and known public health measures are not implemented that can dramatically, and, cost-effectively address these health threats.

This panel of global leaders in oral health will share what can be done to reduce the enormous burden oral diseases are having on people around the world.

This webinar addresses debates in the World Health Assembly on the human rights impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and human rights strengthening in global health governance. Human rights law is central to the COVID-19 response, with this webinar engaging with human rights frameworks to address pandemic threats. Arising out of the human rights analysis of the Independent Panel on Pandemic Preparedness & Response (IPPPR), this panel discussion will support those seeking to reform the World Health Organization (WHO) to strengthen global health and human rights.

The discussion will focus on the contemporary importance of human rights to global health governance, with presentations on the:
• human rights impacts of the COVID-19 response (Judith Bueno de Mesquita, University of Essex)
• harmonization of international human rights law and global health law (Timothy Fish, International Commission of Jurists);
• mainstreaming of human rights in WHO governance (Benjamin Mason Meier, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill); and
• practical implementation of human rights in revisions of global health law (Sharifah Sekalala, University of Warwick).
This webinar will provide an overview of human rights in global health, assess the human rights implications of COVID-19, and examine prospects in the World Health Assembly for strengthening global health law and governance to face future pandemic threats.

Respectful Maternal Care (RMC):
Are we trending in the right direction?
A conversation about the landscape of RMC interventions
in Africa and approaches to routine monitoring and evaluation

Join the discussion that will explore evidence, experiences and perspectives on routine monitoring and evaluation for respectful maternal care in Africa.

May 25, 2021
4:00-5:30 pm EAT (Nairobi)
9:00-10:30 am EDT

High-quality maternal health care requires ensuring respect and dignity and the prevention of mistreatment. A focus on the experience of care is increasingly appreciated and recognized and approaches to advancing this area continue to emerge. However, less is known around how to routinely measure and evaluate respectful care efforts to foster accountability and to track progress.

This webinar is supported through USAID’s Health Evaluation and Applied Research Development (HEARD) Project and co-hosted by HEARD partners East, Central, and Southern Africa Health Community and the University of California San Francisco. HEARD is an implementation science partnership advancing evidence-to-use activities as part of USAID’s Health Research Program 2.0.

The WHO is the leading global public health agency. Its role is essential for our collective and individual health. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and the recently released Report of the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response, we have an opportunity to strengthen it, to make it a more effective, transparent and better funded organization. Learn about reforms that countries can support to achieve these goals and how they can be implemented from former senior WHO leaders.
