Faculty Spotlight: Manuel Barrueco, Guitar

"Music is what feelings sound like."

For guitarist Manuel Barrueco, teaching isn't about handing students a formula. It's about giving them the tools to build their own artistry, then trusting them to use it. Decades after arriving at Peabody as a student himself, he still believes his job is to help bring those feelings out.

Barrueco has spent three decades performing on the world's great stages, from New York's Lincoln Center to the Musikverein in Vienna and Royal Albert Hall in London, earning recognition as one of the most important guitarists of our time.

Faculty Spotlight: Nina DeCesare, Faculty, Double Bass.

Nina is one of the most versatile double bassists of her generation, balancing her chair in the Baltimore Symphony with her teaching at Peabody. A leading advocate for gender equity in the bass community, she founded the Artemis Bass Initiative to support women and nonbinary bassists through mentorship and professional development.

In this video, Nina, a Baltimore native, talks about the honor of mentoring students as they grow from teenagers into young professionals, and what makes Peabody's location, steps from where the Baltimore Symphony performs, so special.

Faculty Spotlight: Amit Peled, Professor of Cello.

Meet our most viral professor. If you caught his cello family room video going viral last December, you already know he doesn't just teach cello, he pays attention.

Amit calls his studio the "cello family room," and treats his students like his own kids, pushing them to find their own voice instead of copying his. For him, teaching in Baltimore is personal, he wants to build a community of artists who stay and make the city better.

Amit is an internationally acclaimed cellist, conductor, and teacher who has performed at Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, and the Berlin Konzerthaus, among many other prestigious stages. He's recorded all the Bach suites on Pablo Casals's legendary cello and is Founder and Artistic Director of the Mount Vernon Virtuosi, an orchestra bringing free concerts and music education to underserved communities across Baltimore.

Jazz runs deep at Peabody. Since the Jazz Studies Department was founded in 2001, Peabody Jazz has built a legacy rooted in Baltimore's rich jazz history.

Led by department chair Sean Jones, the faculty includes bass professor Kris Funn alongside Warren Wolf, Tim Green, and Fran Vielma, respected performers active in the jazz community worldwide. Students learn through real-world performance opportunities at local venues, with coursework that crosses artistic boundaries and prepares you for today's professional landscape, hands-on, from day one.
