In recognition of National Substance Abuse Prevention Month this October, we celebrate MICA alumna and longtime faculty member Whitney Sherman ’71 (Photography BFA), founding director of MICA’s MFA in Illustration Practice, for illustrating the new USPS Know the Facts About Fentanyl stamp.

This marks Sherman’s second USPS semipostal stamp, following her iconic 1998 Breast Cancer Research stamp. Once again, Sherman uses the power of illustration to raise awareness, inspire action, and support critical health research.

The new stamp helps fund research and prevention efforts through the National Institute on Drug Abuse, proving that great design can make a meaningful difference.

Every great idea starts somewhere. Sometimes, it starts in a sketchbook.
For MICA student Logic Thompson '28 (Design and Innovation BFA), creativity is about slowing down, trusting the process, and finding the freedom to explore ideas without expectations. “Art is more like a living thing. You can't rush its changes.” ~ Logic Thompson

In celebration of MICA's Sketchbook Annual: Bicentennial Edition, we're embracing the beauty of the creative process, where unfinished ideas, unexpected discoveries, and personal expression all have a place.

Join us today from 12–1pm outside Falvey Hall. Bring your sketchbook, explore the creative worlds of fellow students, and receive a free T-shirt. Sketchbooks can be shared starting at 10:30 AM, and everyone is welcome to browse, whether or not they choose to share their own work.

Because sometimes the most meaningful part of making art isn't the finished piece. It's everything we discover along the way.

We are proud to celebrate President Cecilia McCormick, who was honored as one of The Baltimore Sun’s 2026 Women to Watch.

Now in its 13th year, Women to Watch recognizes 25 extraordinary women across the Baltimore metropolitan area who are redefining industries, inspiring communities, and driving meaningful change in business, advocacy, the arts, education, healthcare, and beyond.

The evening brought together visionary leaders and changemakers for a memorable celebration of leadership, innovation, and impact.

At MICA, first-generation college students have long brought their unique experiences, determination, and creativity to our community.

For Tony Shore ’93, being the first in his family to attend college inspired a responsibility to portray his Baltimore neighborhood and its people with dignity. For Dominique Samarco ’16, art education opened doors she once only dreamed of walking through and inspired her to help the next generation find their creative voices. And for MICA President Cecilia McCormick, her own first-generation journey reinforced a lifelong belief that education creates opportunity and transforms lives.

Their stories remind us that when we honor where we come from, embrace different perspectives, and expand access to education, we create possibilities not only for ourselves but for generations to come.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor those affected by breast cancer, raise awareness about early detection, and recognize the importance of research in the fight for a cure.

As MICA celebrates its 200th anniversary, we're highlighting Whitney Sherman ’71 (Photography BFA), acclaimed illustrator, educator, and founding director of MICA's MFA in Illustration Practice, whose artwork has made a lasting impact on breast cancer research.

In 1998, Sherman created the artwork for the U.S. Postal Service's first semipostal fundraising stamp, the Breast Cancer Research stamp. Her powerful illustration depicts a woman in a pose inspired by Artemis, the ancient Greek goddess of the hunt, symbolizing strength, courage, survival, and hope. Featuring the words “FUND THE FIGHT” and “FIND A CURE,” the stamp has helped raise more than $100 million for breast cancer research.

Sherman's work is a powerful reminder that art can do more than inspire; it can educate, advocate, and drive meaningful change.

“That’s what illustrators do,” Sherman says. “We communicate ideas in the public sphere. It’s intentional, it’s accessible, and it connects.”

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we celebrate Sherman's extraordinary contribution and the power of creativity to make a difference in people's lives.

It’s National Transfer Student Week, and we’re celebrating the artists who bring their unique experiences, perspectives, and creativity to MICA.

Meet Nadia Tomoney ’27 (Painting BFA) and Xin Ray Penland Obrien ’26 (General Fine Arts BFA), two transfer students whose journeys show that there’s no single path to becoming an artist.

Nadia, who transferred from Community College of Philadelphia, creates deeply personal paintings exploring family, memory, and the stories passed down through generations. At MICA, she’s found the confidence to trust her artistic instincts and embrace her own voice.

Xin Ray, who transferred from Montgomery College, combines painting, printmaking, sculpture, and storytelling to explore identity, relationships, and belonging. At MICA, he’s discovered new freedom to experiment and create work that authentically reflects his experiences.

Their stories remind us that every journey is different and every perspective makes our creative community stronger.
