Could prayer be a part of modern medicine? ๐Ÿค”

Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine set out to find the answer โ€” and the results may surprise you.

In a clinical trial of 180 adult patients experiencing moderate to severe pain or anxiety, those who received just five minutes of in-person prayer reported significantly more relief than those who listened to music. And those benefits lasted up to six weeks.

Even more interesting: it didnโ€™t matter whether patients were religious or even expected it to work. The benefits showed up across the board.

What do you think? Would you be open to this as part of your healthcare experience? โคต๏ธ Share your thoughts below!

Big conversations are happening at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. ๐Ÿฅ

Our Clinical Town Hall brought together faculty, residents, students, and staff to do what we do best โ€” listen, collaborate, and move forward together.

One highlight? The University of Maryland Medical Center is making real strides in reducing ER wait times through targeted operational reforms. Early results speak for themselves โ€” wait times have improved by 50%, with patients now being seen in as little as 10 minutes. That's the kind of progress that makes a difference for patients and providers alike.

From clinical updates to open dialogue about the challenges we face every day, these conversations are what keep our community strong and our care at its best.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine just made a discovery that could change how we understand pancreatic cancer โ€” and it's not what anyone expected.

Scientists studying precancerous pancreas lesions found that, unlike established tumors, these early lesions do NOT alter the cells around them. The surrounding tissue looks completely normal, as if the lesion isn't there at all.

Why does this matter? It likely explains why these lesions are surprisingly common โ€” even in people as young as 20 โ€” while pancreatic cancer itself remains relatively rare. Something beyond the lesion itself has to trigger cancer growth, whether that's inflammation, smoking, obesity, or aging.

Using state-of-the-art technology, UMSOM's Institute for Genome Sciences helped map these tiny lesions with a level of detail never before possible. This kind of groundbreaking, team-driven science is exactly what gives patients and families hope.

Exciting news for Maryland science and medicine! ๐ŸŽ‰

The University of Maryland School of Medicine has received $2.9 million in federal funding to build a state-of-the-art neuroscience research facility โ€” one that will include a MINFLUX microscope, only a handful of which exist in the entire United States.

This incredible instrument can see molecular interactions at the nanoscale โ€” helping researchers study the biological roots of diseases like Alzheimer's, autism, and treatment-resistant depression with unprecedented detail.

The funding was championed by Maryland Senators Angela Alsobrooks and Chris Van Hollen and is part of the new MIND X-Change program, which will let researchers and students from multiple Maryland universities share access to this world-class technology.

The microscope is expected to be installed in late summer or fall 2026. We can't wait to see what discoveries it unlocks.
