Omland Lab UMBC

Omland Lab UMBC Book "Understanding the Tree of Life" about the fallacy of human superiority and how all extant species are related as evolutionary cousins. Esp.

Research on bird evolution, behavior, conservation. NW orioles, such as the understudied Puerto Rican Oriole. In the past we have used molecular phylogenies and population genetics in combination with field and museum studies to study character evolution, speciation, and hybridization in orioles, ducks and ravens. Recent work has emphasized elaborate female coloration and female song. Since 2015,

we have been collaborating with Bahamas National Trust on the critically endangered Bahama Oriole. We are studying conservation genetics, population ecology, female song and year-round territoriality. Prospective PhD students interested in ecology projects on this species should contact me. In addition, I am co-PI on a $2.8 million dollar NSF grant with a primary goal broadening participation in the environmental sciences https://icare.umbc.edu/ The grant focuses on projects in and around Baltimore Harbor. I am interested in collaborative projects studying bird population ecology in the areas around Baltimore Harbor and the Chesapeake Bay. Prospective masters students should contact me - students will have all expenses covered and receive a $34,000 annual stipend.

In my article just published in The Conversation, I argue that it is fundamentally misleading to consider the egg-laying echidna as primitive, simple, lower, ancient or basal. AND it is flawed to think of humans as advanced, complex, higher, recent or derived. These arguments are detailed in my book: "Understanding the Tree of Life".

Omland Lab Alums down under - Anna Kearns and Nick Friedman at the Australian Ornithological Conference. Anna did postdoc work on Australian robins as well as ravens beginning in 2012. Nick did his PhD on coloration in orioles and other blackbirds ending in 2012. So great that they overlapped UMBC and now both have new exciting permenant jobs in Australia.

10 years ago this week, I made my first trip to the Bahamas and began working with Scott Johnson, Shelley Cant, Lynn Gape, Eric Carey, Giselle Deane, and many other colleagues from Bahamas National Trust. We began the ā€œBahama Oriole Projectā€. After five years of hard work, our team - which also included many UMBC students - was able to help convince Birdlife International and IUCN to downlist the Bahama Oriole from ā€œcritically endangeredā€ to ā€œendangeredā€. This was some of the most satisfying work of my career, and I’m super grateful for the friendships and collaboration of all of these great people and so many other others on Andros.
