This afternoon, the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science celebrates the graduating class of 2026 at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology in Baltimore.

We are proud to confer master’s and doctorate degrees to the next generation of environmental scientists and leaders — and to welcome keynote speaker Dr. Caroline M. Solomon, President of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and Vice President of Rochester Institute of Technology.

IMET’s Dr. Eric Schott was featured in a NYT article!

The Potomac River sewage emergency may be officially “over,” but scientists say the damage isn’t. Over 240 million gallons of raw sewage poured into the river in January and researchers are still finding contamination months later.

Though river monitoring shows bacteria levels have declined, scientists and environmentalists said a full recovery isn’t yet assured.

Join DPW for a "Deep Dive" on fisheries management in the Chesapeake Bay, with focus on the impact of blue catfish on striped bass and blue crab populations.

IMET's Artist in Residence Matt Belzer will be having an event on Friday, March 6, 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm at the Earl and Darielle Linehan Concert Hall at UMBC.

UMBC's Jazz Faculty Ensemble, features saxophonist Matt Belzer, bassist Tom Baldwin, and drummer Mark Merella.

They will be joined by UMBC student Leo Hickman on mandolin. The ensemble will perform modern interpretations of classic and recent jazz compositions.

The Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology has been selected as a potential host site for the Chesapeake Conservation & Climate Corps for 2026-27. This is an opportunity for individuals ages 18-25 interested in research and education, looking to gain hands-on experience in science and community engagement. This is a one-year stipend-supported opportunity through Chesapeake Bay Trust and Chesapeake Conservation and Climate Corps. Applications are due March 6 at 4pm.
