Experiential learning is a critical part of pharmacy education, and support along the way can make a meaningful difference for students. 💙

Through the Experiential Learning Program’s (ELP) Student Support initiative, also known as the APPE Student Travel Support Award, UMSOP awarded funding to four pharmacy students to help cover rotation-related expenses such as travel and lodging.

This support was made possible through the School’s first 48-hour giving campaign benefiting ELP, held last fall. Thanks to the generosity of 41 donors, students received assistance that helps make experiential opportunities more accessible.

These experiences prepare students for the next phase of their PharmD journey while strengthening patient care across communities.

Nearly $1.3 million in MPower Early Scholars Awards funding is supporting 29 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty across the University of Maryland, Baltimore and the University of Maryland, College Park. 💊

This investment supports early-career researchers whose work has been impacted by recent funding challenges, strengthening innovation across drug development, infectious disease, immunology, and mental health.

At UMSOP, researchers are advancing science that directly connects discovery to patient care.

Among the awardees:
🦷 Adarsh Subbaswamy, PhD — using artificial intelligence to detect early signs of cardiovascular disease in dental X-rays, creating new opportunities for early intervention, especially in underserved populations.
💊 Yu-Hua Fu, PharmD, MS (PhD student) — studying high-risk medication use in vulnerable populations to improve medication safety and outcomes for older adults.
🧬 Daniel Deredge, PhD — investigating protein structure and dynamics to identify antiviral drug targets, including proteins involved in dengue virus infection.
💉 Jason Junsik Sung, PhD — developing nanoparticle-based therapies designed to treat severe inflammatory diseases such as sepsis.
🦠 Kieran Johnson (PhD student) — working on treatments for antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections.
🧫 Natalya Brown (PhD student) — designing targeted antibacterial delivery strategies to combat resistance.
🧠 Phuong Tran (PhD student) — studying antidepressant strategies aimed at reducing su***de risk in children and adolescents with depression.

Across UMB, this funding includes graduate student, postdoctoral, and junior faculty awards supporting research across multiple disciplines.

Dean Sarah L.J. Michel, PhD, was a panel facilitator on April 24 at Binghamton University’s symposium on Cultivating Generations of Successful Pharmacists: The Journey to a Fulfilling Pharmacy Academic Career. The symposium, held in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, included a keynote from former AACP executive director Lucinda Maine and Marilyn Speedie, a former UMSOP faculty member who went on to serve as dean of the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. The keynote was followed by breakout sessions led by deans of other pharmacy schools across the nation. The event’s goal was to build, network, and retain successful faculty relationships across university systems and career stages. Thank you for representing UMSOP, Dean Michel!

Leadership is not just about knowledge. It is about understanding people. 💙

At this year’s Dumez Memorial Lecture in April, the UMSOP community explored the role of emotional intelligence in leadership, learning, and professional growth. The conversation highlighted how self-awareness, empathy, communication, and connection shape stronger educators, health care professionals, and teams.

In health care and beyond, emotional intelligence is not a soft skill - it is a leadership skill.
