Hop-In The JHU Hop-In Summer Program provides early exposure to academic and social life at the University to a group of academically talented incoming freshmen.

The JHU Hop-In Summer Program provides early exposure to academic and social life at the University to a group of academically talented incoming first-year students, many of whom are the first in their family to go to college, who are from high schools that offered relatively limited opportunities for advanced course work, or who may have significant time constraints with their coursework during t

he first year on campus. Through an intensive five-week residential program the summer before their first year, Hop-In students can earn up to five credit hours, develop social networks, connect with campus resources, and explore the city of Baltimore. From freshmen through senior year, students continue their personal and academic development through resource workshops, social events, and individual advising with the Hop-In staff.

Meet Ms. Garcia! She is one of the Assistant Directors for the Hop-In program. She began her work in this type of program back when she was in college, working in a role similar to the Hop-In Peer Leader position. It was in that role that she discovered the importance of programs like Hop-In to the success of all students at the university level, no matter the background they might have had access to previously. She absolutely loves working with her students and is a wonderful ally to anybody who needs a shoulder to cry on, or somebody to celebrate your victories with. She hopes to encourage students to explore more than just academics while they have access to all the opportunities that Hopkins presents them. In her role as Assistant Director, one of her goals is to inspire people to get more involved in the program as they go along in their career at Hopkins and create an environment of “passing forward” the opportunities which have previously been given to students.

We are excited to announce that the Hop-In BOOK LOAN PROGRAM will continue after its great success during the Fall 2018 semester. The Hop-In Book Loan Program allows Hop-In students to borrow necessary books for the Spring 2019 semester by filling out a book loan request form. The book loan can only be used on textbooks. All textbooks must be returned to the Center for Student Success (CSS) during regular hours of operation and signed off by a CSS staff member. The final deadline for the return of all textbooks is May 16, 2019 at 1pm. Any lost or stolen books will be replaced at the expense of the borrower. Our first staff feature is Dr. Candice Baldwin. She is the new, as of last spring, director of the Hop-In program. She is a first-generation student herself from a humble background. Due to this, she has a profound passion for helping students from similar backgrounds reach their full potential. She focuses strongly on supporting students in whatever ways they might need and has developed multiple goals for the program since becoming the director. These goals include: building a stronger affinity among the students in the program, creating a safe space and program that adds value to the college experience at Hopkins, highlighting other aspects of students outside of GPA, and building a program which helps to cultivate all aspects of the students within it. Dr. Baldwin is always open to meeting students and is available to talk, or set up a meeting, by email or GroupMe DM. She also has open office hours and appointment times if you would like to try to meet face-to-face. If you have not gotten a chance yet, welcome her to the program as she has done wonderful things so far!
