Meet Eric Jurkiewicz, a first-generation college graduate who discovered that saying "yes" to opportunities can transform your entire path.

Eric transferred to the University of Baltimore through the Degrees to Succeed partnership program with CCBC. What started as pursuing a business degree turned into so much more—he became a peer tutor, joined leadership organizations, and found his passion for helping others succeed.

"I don't think I really saw how much it builds you as a person; I more saw it as just a currency enhancer, but it's much more than just getting a raise," Eric shared.

Now completing his MBA with a specialization in Leadership and Management, Eric is even considering a career as a college professor—something he never anticipated when he first walked through UBalt's doors.

His advice? Stay open-minded and embrace the opportunities that come your way. You never know where they'll lead.

The Merrick School of Business is excited to support the UBalt Author Book Talks series at RLB Library.

Join us Monday, Oct. 5 from 3:30-4:45 PM for a discussion with our own Professor David Lingelbach and co-author Valentina Rodríguez Guerra about their book Games Without Thrones: 8 Leadership Lessons from Oligarchs.

The authors describe oligarchs as "uncertainty navigators" and explore what business leaders and professionals can learn from observing extreme concentrations of power and wealth. Featured in The Financial Times, their work examines oligarchy as a modern global phenomenon from post-Soviet Russia to Wall Street and Silicon Valley.

Something strange is happening in the AI debate: political opposites are starting to sound remarkably similar, fixating on either unregulated acceleration or apocalyptic job loss.

But catastrophizing is not a policy.

In a new opinion piece University of Baltimore Professor of Accounting Mikhail Pevzner makes the case for strategic AI governance—directing this transformative technology toward society's biggest challenges rather than leaving it entirely to market forces seeking the fastest returns.

Pevzner proposes large-scale AI missions organized around urgent problems: cancer research, neurological mapping, clean energy, and space exploration. Think Manhattan Project-style collaboration between government, universities, and private industry.

Higher education has a vital role in this effort—not just in solving technical problems, but in helping de-catastrophize the national conversation. As Pevzner notes, academia should ground the public debate in reality, just as cognitive behavioral therapy helps patients move from anxiety to action.

Merrick School of Business grad student Tamara Ward-Lucas faced an unexpected career crossroads. The job she once loved had changed, and she knew she couldn't go back. So she chose to start again—this time with The University of Baltimore's M.S. in Artificial Intelligence for Business.

What happened next surprised even her:

🔹 She conducted research on AI-generated news bias and presented it at a Las Vegas conference 🔹 She launched two community initiatives teaching AI literacy to seniors and high school students 🔹 She earned a nomination for the AINext Emerging Scholar in Responsible AI award 🔹 She was accepted into an international AI policy research group

"I'm surprised, and I'm not saying I didn't think I was capable, I just never had the opportunity, or the motivation, or the support that I have here at UBalt to do the things that I've done over the last year."

After announcing our Spring Break 2027 Global Field Study to Portugal, we're thrilled to open applications for a second international experience: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Join us May 22-30, 2027, for an immersive exploration of business in one of Latin America's most influential cities. This Global Field Study will take you beyond the classroom to examine:

• Smart Cities and urban operations
• Waterfront revitalization and public infrastructure
• Real estate development and mixed-use communities
• Social innovation and community development
• Logistics, transportation, and economic strategy

Through company visits, expert discussions, and cultural immersion—including a Sugar Loaf tour, Carnival experience, and Tijuca Forest exploration—you'll gain firsthand insight into international business practices in an emerging market.

Yes, it is the first week of classes, but its time to think about the Global Field Study in Business course to Portugal.

This 3-credit course takes you beyond the classroom. Study Portugal's business landscape through on-site company visits, expert briefings, and hands-on analysis.

Location: Lisbon & Porto | March 13-22, 2027
Eligibility: Graduate students & advanced undergraduates

WHY ENROLL?
• Direct engagement with European business operations
• Build cross-cultural professional skills
