UMBC Cyber Scholars & Affiliates The UMBC Cyber Scholars and Affiliates programs aim to prepare the next generation of cybersecurity

The UMBC Cyber Scholars Program is a new scholarship program directed by the UMBC Center for Cybersecurity and run in partnership with UMBC’s Center for Women in Technology (CWIT) Scholars program. The program is funded by a generous $1 million grant from the Northrop Grumman Foundation. The program began in Fall 2013 with a goal to support 15 to 20 scholars annually. Scholars are supported financ

ially and incorporated into a scholarship community that includes special on-campus housing, unique courses, mentoring, and the chance to take part in cybersecurity research and internships early in their academic careers. The Cyber Affiliates Program is a way for students who are not scholars to get engaged with a community of other students interested in the field of cybersecurity and to benefit from some of the events and programs offered through the scholars program. A primary focus of both programs is to increase the representation of women and other underrepresented groups in the cyber field.

Happening now: 22 current UMBC students and 10 mentors from Northrop Grumman are kicking off the month-long virtual CyPi Competition. Five teams of students, each with the support of two mentors, will create a cybersecurity-related app, which they will present to a panel of judges in mid-August. We are grateful to Northrop for being a great partner and offering this program over the summer, when many students had internships and other opportunities canceled due to the pandemic. Special thanks to Cyber Scholar alumna Priyanka Ranade for managing and facilitating the competition and to fellow Cyber Scholar alumni Victoria, Vitaliy, and Jana for being mentors to some of the teams!
