We are saddened to share news of the passing of Jane Stephenson ’57. As a former trustee and Chair of the board, and founder of the New Opportunity School for Women, Jane has left a lasting legacy here at Lees-McRae.

We are grateful for her years of dedicated service to the women of the Southern Appalachian region, and know that her impact will continue to be felt for years to come.

This era of transformational growth for Lees-McRae College requires precedent-setting investments from those who believe in our mission and have a desire to support our future. Charlotte philanthropists Smoky and Margaret Bissell are just such supporters. The Bissells believe in the power of ONE Lees-McRae and have committed $10 million—the largest donation in college history—in support of a new housing community.

Their gift will support the construction of new Bobcat Way townhouses, residential facilities that will serve both college students and employees as outlined in the facilities master plan. This project is vital for the success of the college as our student population continues to grow.
