A History of Kappa Sigma in North America

Kappa Sigma's North American roots go back to December 10, 1869, at the University of Virginia. There in Charlottesville, Five Friends -- William Grigsby McCormick, George Miles Arnold, Edmund Law Rogers, Frank Courtney Nicodemus and John Covert Boyd -- met in Brother McCormick's room at 46 East Lawn. And it was there that these Five Men united themselves

beyond the bonds of friendship and into brotherhood. The Five Friends & Brothers adopted and preserved the traditions of the University of Bologna (Italy) and formed the United States' first chapter of Kappa Sigma, Zeta. Here 140 years later, the Lambda-Iota chapter at Lyon College proudly carries on the traditions of the Five Friends & Brothers. Since its inception, the Lambda-Iota Chapter has dominated all aspects of campus life. Brothers of Lambda-Iota have proven to be men of exceptional skills, excelling in all academic pursuits as well as in many athletic sports (both varsity and intramural). Our brothers have involved themselves in almost every campus organization, from academic honor societies to college-sponsored social organizations.
