LSU College of the Coast & Environment

LSU College of the Coast & Environment CC&E houses the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences and the Department of Environment

The College offers graduate degree programs in both departments and an undergraduate degree program in Coastal Environmental Sciences. CC&E works to restore barrier islands, improve hydrology in salt, brackish, and freshwater marshes, protect fish and shellfish for commercial and sports use, provide first warning capability against devastating storms, effect environmental remediation, and better understand human impacts on ecosystems, to name just a few of our important research initiatives. Our academic programs train tomorrow’s scientists, managers, and policymakers. To learn more about each department, click the following links:

Why do American eels swim from Arkansas to Georgia? Find out in our latest ✨ CC&E Student Spotlight✨

Christian Walker, a PhD candidate in DOCS, is writing a dissertation on fish movement in Louisiana – tracking four very different species: the American eel, juvenile bull sharks, gulf sturgeon and silver carp.

He said the wildly different ways fish species inhabit and affect their environment is what drew him to the topic.

“Every species has different life history, and they all use the same area of Louisiana... For instance, I was out downloading receivers tracking carp movement yesterday, and people were catching bull sharks at the dock that I was launching from on I-10. We frequently pick up sharks and eels on receivers we have deployed for carp. All the species use the same waters for different parts of their lives.”

He is focused specifically on fish movement patterns:
🦈 The bull sharks he tracks in Lake Ponchartrain leave every winter, and return every summer.
🌊 Adult American eels migrate from Arkansas through Louisiana, eventually traveling from coastal Louisiana to the Sargasso Sea off the coast of Georgia to reproduce before dying. Juveniles eventually swim back to Louisiana and Arkansas.

After he graduates, Walker hopes to continue working in movement and spatial research, either in industry or academia. “I really like the geospatial science, the statistics side too, as well as doing the research, and that's applicable across all industry.”

Congratulations 🙌 to CES student Paris Ally, who is representing CC&E this year on LSU's Homecoming Court 👑 🐅

"Representing the College of Coast and Environment on Homecoming Court means standing for a field that doesn't always get the spotlight, but is so integral to shaping how we protect our coastlines, our communities, and our future," Paris says. "Every data point collected and every research paper written is part of a bigger story about resilience. I’m proud to carry that story onto the court."

CC&E folks, don't forget to vote for Paris🗳️. Link is ⬇️

The silver carp is an invasive species, plaguing waterways up and down the Mississippi River.

LSU CC&E researcher Christian Walker, a PhD candidate, tracks the fish’s movements in Louisiana as part of his dissertation research.

He says they’re present in almost every waterway in the state, but little is known about its behavior.

Walker and his fellow researchers track the fish using acoustic telemetry – fish are given acoustic tags and released. The tags ping sensors placed in bodies of water around the state.

This lets scientists know where the fish is going.

“We are learning that they’re pretty migratory. They’re migrating up rivers hundreds of kilometers,” Walker said.

In the spring they may travel all the way up to the Ouchita River in the northern part of the state, and then back down to the Atchafalaya throughout the rest of the year.

Walker says the state’s rivers seem to provide a good environment for growth, but maybe not reproduction. “They grow really fast and they're very big, and there's not as many of them,” Walker said.

“If you want to manage any fish, whether it's invasive or endangered, you need to understand how they use the environment they are in. We hope this research will help managers effectively address this growing problem,” he said.

DOCS’ Amanda Achberger's research goes where few have gone before.. She’s on a quest to learn about some the smallest, least understood creatures on the planet.

Achberger studies the micro-organisms that live around inactive hydrothermal vents at the bottom the ocean.

What she’s learning may change the way we look at the ocean.

“These are very metal-rich, chemical-rich, rock deposits. We have found there are microorganisms that are very happy to be living there, and they are contributing potentially significantly to carbon cycling in the deep sea, and that is having implications for higher trophic level organisms…. We're starting to find that there might be a unique, potentially endemic animal population in these sites that are being supported by this microbial community.”
