🎉 Two LSU CSE assistant professors. Two papers published at one of the top AI conferences in the world.

We’re proud to celebrate Dr. James Ghawaly and Dr. D**g Lao, whose research is being published at NeurIPS 2026, an A*-ranked conference and one of the premier venues for AI and machine learning research.

Dr. D**g Lao is the first author of “Test-Time Defense Against Adversarial Attacks via Stochastic Resonance of Latent Ensembles,” alongside Yuxiang Zhang, Haniyeh Ehsani Oskouie, Yangchao Wu, Alex Wong, and Stefano Soatto.

Their research tackles adversarial attacks that can cause AI models to make incorrect predictions, introducing a new approach to make models more resilient at test time without requiring retraining.

Dr. James Ghawaly is a co-author of “Tesserae and MoDiCo: A Billion-Fragment Dataset and Multi-Branch Architecture for File Fragment Classification,” alongside Dr. Golden G. Richard III and LSU students Samuel Hildebrand and Joshua McCain.

And there’s another reason we’re especially proud of this one: Samuel is the lead author. Their work introduces a billion-fragment dataset and a new approach to file fragment classification, an important challenge in digital forensics and cybersecurity.

Having two of our assistant professors publishing at an A*-ranked conference is an exciting accomplishment. Seeing our students contributing to research at this level, and in Samuel’s case leading it, makes it even more meaningful.

We’re especially proud of the mentorship behind accomplishments like these. Our faculty are advancing research while creating opportunities for students to work alongside them, grow as researchers, and take the lead on work being recognized at the highest levels of the field. 💜💛

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ghawaly, Dr. Lao, Dr. Richard, Samuel, Joshua, and all of their collaborators! 🎉

💀 Please join us in welcoming the newest member of our faculty, Professor Jasper P. Bonington II.

Professor Bonington has been settling into life at LSU CSE, and luckily, Professor A. Bubu has taken him under his wing. He’s been showing Jasper the ropes, getting him acquainted with the office, and helping him prepare for what they both agree is the most important time of the academic year: Halloween. 🎃

Jasper brings years of experience in deadlines, bare-bones coding, and keeping a very impressive skeleton crew running. His teaching philosophy is simple: no student should ever be afraid to ask a question. Although, admittedly, his office hours can be a little dead.

So far, Jasper seems to be settling in nicely. Professor A. Bubu has been making sure he knows his way around, introducing him to life at LSU CSE, and helping him get his office set up.

And Professor A. Bubu is thrilled to finally have a colleague who appreciates his enthusiasm for Halloween. We have some frightfully fun things planned for the two of them this month, so you may want to keep an eye on our page. 👀

Jasper will be hanging around the office throughout October, so stop by to meet our newest professor and take a picture with him! Make sure to tag us so we can see it. 💜💛

But first, Professor Bonington needs a teaching assignment.
What class do you think Jasper should teach? Wrong answers are highly encouraged. 💀👇

🎓 It’s official: Dr. Taha Gharaibeh! 🎉

We’re excited to celebrate Dr. Gharaibeh, who successfully defended his PhD dissertation yesterday and officially earned that new title! 💜💛

His dissertation, “Volatile Evidence at Scale: Forensically Sound Preservation and High-Performance Memory Forensics for Containers and ROS-Based Robots,” tackles challenges at the intersection of digital forensics, high-performance computing, containers, and robotics, exploring how valuable evidence that can disappear when systems change or shut down can be preserved and analyzed.

Through his research, Dr. Gharaibeh developed new tools and approaches to make memory forensics faster and more effective at scale, from container environments to ROS-based robots. His work included accelerating memory analysis, reconstructing thousands of robot poses from memory alone, and demonstrating why forensic readiness matters as robotic systems become increasingly complex.

A PhD represents years of research, persistence, problem-solving, and probably more than a few moments of “one more experiment.” We’re incredibly proud to see all of Dr. Gharaibeh’s hard work lead to this moment.

A special thank you to his advisor and committee chair, Dr. Ibrahim (Abe) Baggili, for his mentorship and guidance throughout this journey, and to committee members Dr. Golden George Richard III, Dr. Joseph Khoury, Dr. Andrew Webb, and Dean’s Representative Dr. Frederick D. Weil for their time, expertise, and support.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Taha Gharaibeh on successfully defending his dissertation and earning his PhD! 🎉🎓

How can we make social media safer for children and teens?

LSU CSE Assistant Professor Dr. Reza Ghaiumy Anaraky recently spoke with WBRZ Channel 2 about changes coming to Facebook and Instagram aimed at protecting younger users.

The changes follow a settlement between Meta and 47 states and include new limits on daily use and notifications, nighttime restrictions, stronger parental controls, and additional age verification measures.

Reza shared his expertise on what these changes could mean for families and why safeguards built into social media platforms are only part of the equation. While these tools can help, he also emphasized the important role parents play in helping children safely navigate social media and the online world.

We’re proud to see Dr. Anaraky’s expertise helping bring context to an issue that affects so many families and young people.

Thank you to WBRZ Channel 2 for speaking with Reza and helping bring attention to this important topic.
