Today, we honor Juneteenth, a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States and commemorates the moment on June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, progress, and the enduring contributions of Black Americans throughout history. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing pursuit of equity and justice while honoring the generations whose strength and perseverance continue to inspire us.

As W.E.B. Du Bois wrote, “The cost of liberty is less than the price of repression.” These words remind us that freedom must be valued, protected, and advanced through education, leadership, service, and collective action.

As members of the Lamar Black Alumni Network, we celebrate the rich legacy, achievements, and impact of our Black alumni, students, faculty, staff, and communities. May we continue to uplift one another, preserve our history, and build a future rooted in opportunity, excellence, and belonging.
