SUMMER CIVIC LEADERSHIP ADVENTURE continuedโ€ฆin Peru!

๐Ÿ˜ท๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿฆท ๐๐š๐ญ๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ž ๐ƒ๐ข๐œ๐ค๐ž๐ง๐ฌ and Pre-Dental peers from MedLife returned to Lima this Summer to continue their service to improve dental care access for Peruvians. ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ช

Biology Pre-Dental senior Natalie:

๐Ÿš set up mobile dental clinics in underserved pueblos jovenes on outskirts of Lima

๐Ÿชฅ taught children how to brush teeth as a way to instill dental hygiene practices at earliest age possible to help prevent malnutrition, meningitis, tooth loss, and more

๐Ÿฆท assisted dentists with suction, curing lights, and sanitation during cavity fillings and tooth extractions

โ€œI learned the importance of health education, proper patient communication, and access to quality care. I learned and saw so much, and I wouldn't trade this experience for anything!โ€ Natalie says.

โšœ๏ธ ๐Ÿ“œ ๐Ÿ”ฑ The legacy continues!!! MedLife formed at LU thanks to an idea HSA mentee ๐€๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐Œ๐š๐ซ๐ž๐๐ข๐š (๐‚๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘) shared with her peer mentor ๐Œ๐š๐œ๐ค๐ž๐ง๐ณ๐ข๐ž ๐’๐š๐ฏ๐š๐ ๐ž (๐‚๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ). SUMMER CIVIC LEADERSHIP ADVENTURE

โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ท๐Ÿฉบ Riobamba, Ecuador, was the destination this Summer for HSA Vice President ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง๐ง๐š ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ฆ. ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡จ

As a MedLife civic leader, the Biology Pre-Med senior worked with indigenous communities who spoke a combination of Spanish and Kichwa. To gain the trust of a community that relies on traditional healers, Brianna:

๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ”Ž๐Ÿ’ก worked creatively while evaluating concerns (from hip pain to pap smears) of Catholic female patients who preferred to have husbands present, yet also declined examinations that required exposing shoulders, upper legs, abdomen, and the like

๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿซ adjusted expectations for patientsโ€™ oxygen saturation levels: under 93% usually warrants medical attention, but the high elevation of this Andes Mountains region means healthy patients are usually within 85% to 89%

๐Ÿšฐ๐Ÿ›ข๐Ÿ’ง helped construct a community water tank and distributed medicine that was sourced locally, all to ensure patients can continue treatment after volunteers leave

โ€œOn one of our first days in Ecuador, we met with the community that requested the water tank and spent the day learning to milk a cow ๐Ÿฅ›๐Ÿ„, shear a sheep ๐Ÿ‘, and had the opportunity to taste local grains๐ŸŒพ. The trip was definitely hard work as we combated altitude sickness, reduced oxygen, and even hiked up hills with bags of rocks,โ€ Brianna says.

๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ™Œ โ€œBut was worth it a million times over because at the end of the day, medicine is not just for those who can afford it, understand it, or who live near it, but for all lives.โ€

๐Ÿญ ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Chemical Engineering senior ๐ƒ๐ž๐ง๐ง๐ข๐ฌ ๐“๐ซ๐š๐ง completed his FIFTH (WOW!!!๐Ÿคฉ) and final internship this Summer before he graduates LU.

He has enjoyed contributing to meaningful work in the refining industry throughout his undergraduate career. ๐Ÿ— โ›ฝ

This Summer, Dennis worked as a Light Oils intern at ExxonMobil in Beaumont. Back in Summer 2023, he started off as an Engineering mentor at IC-STEM summer camp before working at Texas refinery co-ops and internships at Dow, Olin, and ExxonMobil.

๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ‘š This Fall, Natalie will head to APNAโ€™s 40th annual conference in Phoenix, where she will meet her fellow Nursing undergraduate BOD Student Scholars, coming from prestigious Nursing schools that include Johns Hopkins, Duke, and Yale.

โ€œAs a BOD Student Scholar, I will attend different sessions as a student, but also as a volunteer to help facilitate the educational sessions. It will be a great opportunity to network and to learn more about psychiatric nursing and advanced practice,โ€ Natalie says.

Taipei, Taiwan! โ›ฉ๏ธ ๐Ÿฏ ๐Ÿง‹

๐ŸฅผAs a David J. Beck Fellow, Isabella conducted cancer health research to explore how engineered systems, such as mRNA-based approaches and cancer vaccines, can be used to enhance the bodyโ€™s immune response to disease. โš•๏ธ๐Ÿฉทโœจ

Her home base this summer was Dr. Che-Ming Jack Huโ€™s lab in Academia Sinica. She strengthened ๐Ÿ’ช her knowledge of developing specialized cancer vaccines, culturing bacteria for TCR therapy, and creating gelatinous artificial cells.

Isabellaโ€™s unforgettable tour of Taiwan included:
โ€ visiting Yangmingshan during hydrangea season
๐Ÿฅพ hiking through Alishan while local tea farmers harvested tea leaves
๐Ÿ˜ธ meeting the feline residents of Houtong Cat Village
๐Ÿฎ exploring Shifen, Jiufen, Sun Moon Lake, and other beautiful destinations

๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿพโš•๏ธFuture Vet earns prestigious USDA veterinary internship!!! Super proud of Reaud Fellow Biology Pre-Vet senior ๐‘๐ฒ๐š๐ง ๐’๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ฌ!

After applying for the paid internship this summer, Ryan just received the good news of his acceptance. ๐Ÿ™Œ For every year he works with US Department of Agriculture veterinarians, he will earn scholarship money toward veterinary school.

๐Ÿถ ๐Ÿฅ Next step for Ryan: figuring out the best veterinary school to attend!

Ryan will work with the USDA for at least five years through the Saul T. Wilson, Jr. internship program before embarking on his veterinary career.
