LU students have elected a new group of SGA officers to represent them in the 2026-27 academic year.

Carsen Barrett has been elected president of the Student Government Association. Barrett is physical education teacher education major from Groves. Briley O'Connor, a political science major from Humble, is the vice president-elect.

Class senators for 2026-27 are Ashton Rainey, Senior Class; Elizabeth Brankin, Junior Class; and Brittanny Sherman, Sophomore Class.

LU students voted online Tuesday and Wednesday to choose executive board positions and class senators for the 2026-27 academic year. The elected leaders will take their oaths of office at the Toast to Leadership ceremony on April 22, and begin their terms on June 1.

The Student Government Association, formed in 1955, advocates for the interests and concerns of over 17,000 Lamar University students to enhance the student experience.

The Division of Student Affairs is seeking applications for Seniors of Significance. The Seniors of Significance Award recognizes students who have who have brought distinction to Lamar University through excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service to the campus and community.

Seniors who will graduate in May, August, or December of 2026 are eligible to be considered for recognition. Seniors of Significance will receive recognition at the Toast to Leadership banquet, a graduation stole, and a commemorative gift. Honorees will also be featured on the LU website.

The Gentry-Kemble Legacy Award recipients will be selected from the Seniors of Significance. Recipients of these two awards will each receive $1,000.

The application to run for office in the 2026-27 Student Government Association is now open! If you're ready to serve your fellow students, develop your leadership skills, and make a positive impact at LU, consider running for SGA!

Open positions include President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, and Senators for the Senior, Junior, and Sophomore classes.

Deadline to apply is Monday, March 16.
