Did you know that the longest word in most major English dictionaries is 45 letters long? That word is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis!

This is a lung disease that is caused by breathing in very fine ash and sand dust. Here is the breakdown of this word that gives it's meaning:

Pneumono - Lung
ultra - Extremely
microscopic - Very Small
silico - Silicon or Sand Dust
volcano - Volcanic Ash
coniosis - Dust induced lung scarring

However, the word is actually a synonym for the inflammatory lung disease called silicosis. This word was actually only invented to set a world record!

Did you know that the TRIO programs across the state of West Virginia serve more than 4,000 students each academic year?

TRIO Upward Bound came to WVU Tech in 1966, and the program currently services 7 high schools in the state. TRIO Student Support Services came to WVU Tech in 1971 and has helped thousands of students graduate college!

Meet Evan Nicolau, one of the TRIO SSS Peer Mentors for the 2026-27 academic year! Evan is a senior, and he is majoring in Information Systems here at WVU Tech.

A fun fact about Evan is that he is an avid snowboarder! His favorite TRIO event is the First-Gen Celebration.

Evan is here to help all of our students in the program. If you ever need assistance while you're in our office, look for him and he'll be happy to help you!

Around 2,000 of these islands are inhabited, and more than 5,000 of the islands have no official name!

💙 TRIO Tuesday! 💛

TRIO Student Support Services was established in 1968 under the original name "Special Services for Disadvantaged Students." This program was established to help undergraduate students who faced certain obstacles to graduating college, such as being a first generation college student. It was preceded by the Upward Bound and Talent Search programs, and the three became informally known as "the TRIO programs."

In 1986, the program was officially renamed "Student Support Services" under the Higher Education Amendments. TRIO SSS has helped millions of students across the country graduate since it's creation!

Meet Gracie Beaver, one of the TRIO SSS Peer Mentors for the 2026-27 academic year! Gracie is a junior, and she's majoring in Psychology here at WVU Tech. She is also minoring in Sociology and Criminal Justice.

A fun fact about Gracie is that she was one of the first three WVU Tech students to participate and graduate from the Leadership Beckley Program! Her favorite TRIO event is Janie's Cooking Show.
