Northwest Indian College staff, students and summer interns are attending the 2026 AISES National Conference in Portland, OR this week!

Six of the 21 students who participated in NWIC's Salish Sea Research Center - SSRC summer internship program presented today in the poster research presentation category. AISES is one of two national conferences where the SSRC summer interns have the opportunity to present their research.

In attendance at AISES are: SSRC Senior Researcher Sylvie Arques; SSRC Program Assistant Stormy Woodenlegs-Boling (Northern Cheyenne); NWIC students Charleigh Taylor (Lummi), Joelle Jones (Umatilla & current SSRC intern), Daralee Ridley (Lummi); Red Lake Nation College student Johnathan Boyd (Red Lake Nation); University of Idaho student Arlissa Miller (Nimiipuu/Nez Perce) and Central Washington University student Alexis Kinley (Lummi).

We are so proud of these students and staff for representing NWIC! We hope they have a great time participating, learning, and networking at the conference.

📣 NWIC will be closed Monday, Oct. 12 for holiday observance for Indigenous Peoples' Day.

The College will reopen during regular business hours on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

📣 On Monday, Oct. 12, please join us in the evening at Lummi Nation School for "Answering the Call of Our Ancestors," an Indigenous Peoples' Day celebration sponsored by the Community Consortium for Cultural Recognition (C3R).

Yesterday afternoon, Northwest Indian College hosted visitors from the Bureau of Indian Education and Bureau of Indian Affairs at our Muckleshoot Extended Campus location.

NWIC President Dr. Lexie Tom, NWIC Muckleshoot Site Director Nicole Cabral, Native Environmental Science Dept. Chair Dr. Emma Norman, Native Studies Leadership Dept. Chair Dr. Christina Grendon and current and former NWIC students took turns sharing their stories and experiences of attending and teaching at NWIC.

Our NWIC staff, students and alumni were joined by BIE Director Tony Dearman, BIE Associate Deputy Director of Post-Secondary Education Stephanie Conduff, and Jarrod Lowery, Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs, for the discussion.

We're grateful to our Muckleshoot Extended Site for hosting and providing snacks, and to our visitors for the opportunity to share more about NWIC and the impacts of our programs. 🙌🏼
