Why can familiar situations, words, and objects suddenly seem strange or novel?  This phenomenon, named jamais vu, may reflect a disruption in our brain’s memory and perception mechanisms in the presence of an overly repeated or automatic stimulus. 

Rather than simply recognizing something as “known” indefinitely, the brain appears to continuously evaluate our experiences. Therefore, jamais vu may reveal how flexible and dynamic our perception can be, even for the things we encounter every day.

🧠 Are “core memories” really what we think they are?

Dr. Helen Marlo, Dean of the School of Psychology at Notre Dame de Namur University, was recently featured in Good Housekeeping’s article, “Psychologists Explain How ‘Core Memories’ Don’t Work the Way Parents Want Them To.”

Inspired by Pixar’s Inside Out, the article explores the science behind childhood memories and how our experiences shape who we become.

Dr. Marlo explains that while the idea of a single defining “core memory” may be exaggerated, repeated emotionally significant experiences contribute to our autobiographical memories, helping shape our identities and relationships.
