A new apprenticeship model at Bemidji State University is helping elementary-school paraprofessionals take the next step toward becoming licensed teachers, with a pathway that allows students to complete their bachelor’s degree in three years while continuing to work in the schools they already know.

The program gives paraprofessionals credit for their work experience and helps address barriers like cost, scheduling and access to support. Since launching its first cohort in 2025 with 13 students, the program has grown rapidly, with enrollment projected to exceed 60 students by summer 2027.

Bemidji State University is helping shape a more climate-resilient future for Northeast and Central Minnesota. 🦫

Through BSU’s Center for Empowered Communities, led by Dr. Anna Carlson, associate professor of environmental studies, the university is partnering with the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission and other regional organizations to develop a climate resilience plan.

The project includes creation of a regional resilience plan, which will “integrate climate science, Indigenous knowledge and local expertise to enhance forest and water management.”

This week, we kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with the El Sabor Latine Block Party! Despite the rain, the celebration continued with great food, dancing and plenty of community spirit. It was a great way to come together and celebrate Hispanic culture and heritage at BSU. 🦫💚
