UVM Extension Commercial Horticulture

Resources for fruit and vegetable producers in Vermont and beyond. New crops and new ways of growing and harvesting crops are being explored and adopted.

The Agricultural Engineering Program of UVM Extension is dedicated to enhancing Vermont’s food systems through analysis, design, evaluation and adoption of infrastructure, technology and equipment that meet the needs of food producers and processors. and. Regional processing of crops to value-added food products is on the rise. Consumers are demanding nutritious, safe, and locally-sourced foods through-out the year requiring a focus on extended growing season and improved storage mechanisms. This is happening at a time when energy is expensive and environmental impact is increasingly important. As a result, the agricultural landscape and the people who work in it are changing and adapting. The dynamic nature of the food system demands technical assistance in several areas including engineering. Full Belly Farm is a retail and wholesale vegetable, berry, and ornamentals farm operated by Sarah and Stephen Park. They purchased the well-known Norris Berry Farm in 2018 with support from the Vermont Land Trust, the Vermont Agricultural Credit Corporation, and the Farm Service Agency. The farm has 3 acres of June-bearing and 1/2 acre of everbearing strawberries, an acre of blueberries, and about a dozen acres of mixed vegetables. It also has 28,000 sq. ft. of high tunnels primarily for flowers, bedding plants, and tomatoes. Sales are through a 75 member CSA, a farm stand on premises, and wholesaling to local stores and restaurants. Join us for a farm tour focused on berries and tunnel production, and a discussion about marketing.

Join our hosts Peggy Willey and John Benjamin, owners of Wild Hill Organics, a certified organic farm and VVBGA members, to learn about blueberry production and customer relations in 42 years of the blueberry business. Specialists from UVM Extension will join us for a discussion of insect pest and disease management, and hands-on observations of wild bee pollinators in blueberries plus an update on recent pollinator research in Vermont.

Join the Vermont Apples and the UVM Extension at these hands-on field meetings at two of Vermont’s many beautiful apple orchards. We will discuss topics related to commercial tree fruit, such as integrated pest and pollinator management, pest and disease updates, and thinning. This event is free and geared to commercial growers and people that work with them. Light snacks will be provided.

At each location the following CEUs will be available: Pesticide applicator credits available: 1 credit for categories 1A, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Certified Crop Adviser CEUs available: pending.
