Leadership formation is about more than preparing for a role.

It means learning how to listen across difference, ask thoughtful questions, and bring theological depth to complex situations.

At BST, leadership formation happens through study, conversation, reflection, and community. Students are invited to engage questions of faith, justice, culture, and vocation while growing into leaders who can serve thoughtfully in a changing world.

Congratulations to Rev. Katie Choy-Wong on being named Pastor Emerita of New Life Christian Fellowship! 🎉

Rev. Choy-Wong, a 1980 graduate of BST’s Master of Divinity program and the current Chair of our Board of Trustees, shepherded New Life with conviction, grace, and faith. Her ministry continues to shape the congregation she served, and her leadership continues to bless our school.

We give thanks for her faithful witness in both the church and the academy, and we’re honored to celebrate alongside the New Life family.

What does leadership look like when we begin by listening across cultures, identities, and experiences?

On October 15, the Center for Truth, Racial Healing, & Restorative Justice at BST will create space for conversation about identity, vulnerability, theology, and the experiences that shape our communities.

At 4 p.m., Dr. Russell Jeung, Rev. Dr. Marie Onwubuariri, and Dr. Thang Sian Sing will take part in a panel discussion.

At 6:30 p.m., Rev. Dr. Don Ng will present the Fall 2026 Lecture, “Equality Rooted in Shared Identity and Vulnerability: Asian Diasporic Theology of Exile.”

Faith leaders are often called to serve well beyond the walls of the church.

They may find themselves working alongside community organizations, advocating for neighbors, navigating public institutions, or helping communities respond to injustice.

BST’s Public Theology Certificate Program, developed in partnership with Faith in Action, brings theological study together with practical training in community organizing.

Through five courses and a semester-long internship with an experienced mentor, students develop tools for connecting faith, leadership, and public engagement.

The program can be completed on its own or alongside a degree program and is designed to fit the realities of working life.

During Latinx Heritage Month, we are honored to share Bertha Alicia Castro’s reflection on Latinx faith-based leadership.

Bertha is a student in BST’s BA Equivalency Program in Spanish, and in this video she reminds us that leadership is about more than what is heard from a pulpit. It is about accompanying people and families through difficult moments, helping them find resources, and offering hope.

As Bertha shares:

“El ser líder no es solo un título, sino que hay que servir con amor, con dignidad y con empatía.”

“Being a leader is not just a title, but a call to serve with love, dignity, and empathy.”

We celebrate the voices, experiences, and leadership that continue to strengthen faith communities and shape ministry in meaningful ways.

What stories shape the way communities understand who they are?

Through the Arc Storytelling Grants, BST is supporting congregations as they explore the connections between racial-ethnic identity, Christian identity, and the stories that shape their communities.

This summer, leaders from participating congregations gathered at BST for a day of reflection, conversation, and collaboration as they began developing their storytelling projects.

These projects create space for communities to listen closely to their own histories, experiences, and faith, and to consider how those stories can strengthen ministry today.

We are grateful for the leaders and congregations bringing this work to life.

From September 1 through October 4, Christians around the world observe the Season of Creation, a time to reflect on our relationship with the earth and our responsibility to care for it.

Creation is not simply something to admire. It is something we are called to care for.

For communities of faith, creation care also raises questions of justice. Who is most affected by environmental harm? How do our choices shape the lives of our neighbors? What does faithful leadership look like when care for creation and care for people are inseparable?

At BST, theological formation invites us to engage questions like these with faith, responsibility, and hope.
