Thomas Banyacya, Sr. (1909-1999) was a messenger and translator for Hopi elders beginning in 1948, after the invention and use of atomic bombs confirmed an ancient Hopi prediction. He tirelessly traversed the globe trying to help people understand the warnings revealed in the Hopi Prophecy.

In November 1995, we followed Thomas to the Whole Life Expo in Las Vegas, where he made two hour-long presentations over two days.

Our friend and Lisjan Ohlone leader Corrina Gould received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Heyday Books in 2021. 🎊

Here's an excerpt from the video we created for the Heyday Harvest online event to portray Corrina’s lifelong commitment to preserving and protecting the culture and sacred sites of the Ohlone people, in recognition of her activism and leadership among California Indians and beyond.

Corrina Gould is the tribal spokesperson for the Confederated Villages of Lisjan/Ohlone and Co-Founder/Co-Director of the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust. Born and raised in her ancestral homeland, the Ohlone territory of Huchiun, Corrina is mother of three and grandmother of four. Gould has worked on protecting the ancient burial sites of her ancestors throughout the Bay Area for decades. As a tribal leader, she has continued to defend the shellmounds, uphold her nation’s inherent right to sovereignty, and stand in solidarity with Indigenous relatives to protect sacred waters, mountains and lands all over the world.

Corrina has been leading the effort to protect the West Berkeley Shellmound, which has been restored to Indigenous stewardship. 👏

In honor of the brilliant Dr. Noa Emmett Aluli, we produced this video for his memorial service after he passed away on November 30, 2022. 🕯

Emmett was instrumental in enabling the Sacred Land Film Project to tell the story of the Protect Kaho`olawe Ohana’s 50-year campaign to stop the bombing of a sacred Hawaiian island and to restore both the island and Native Hawaiian cultural practices.

Emmett was a tireless sacred site guardian and a healer of both land and people. He often said, "The health of the land is the health of the people."

On and beyond, we recognize the vital role that sacred lands play in sustaining cultures, protecting biodiversity, and nurturing our connection to the natural world. 🌎

For Indigenous Peoples, mountains, rivers, forests and springs are places of ceremony, learning and renewal. They are also vital places for species diversity and ecological health. 🌊

Protecting sacred places means protecting both cultural heritage and the living systems that sustain us all. 🌿
