Berkeley Industrial Engineering and Operations Research

Berkeley Industrial Engineering and Operations Research The Berkeley IEOR department is one of the finest schools in the world and is ranked 2nd in the U.S

The Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research combines two closely related professions concerned with the efficient operation of complex systems. The industrial engineering profession involves the design, organization, implementation, and economic operation of integrated production and service systems using people, materials, and equipment. Areas of application include not only

the basic manufacturing and high technology production processes essential to our economy, but also service organizations such as banks, health care facilities, libraries, and government agencies. Operations research emphasizes the basic understanding of the functioning of complex systems of technology and management through mathematical models for the purpose of predicting system behavior or optimizing system performance under economic and technological constraints. Our Faculty are world-renowned experts in many application areas, from semiconductor manufacturing to the design and deregulation of energy markets to supply chain management to robotics to discrete event simulation, and have made important advancements in the theory of operations research, in areas such as algorithm design, integer programming, non-linear programming, and stochastic modeling.

"I enjoyed learning from my professors and GSIs, working on projects with my friends and peers and finding out how capable I am when I set my mind to something. There are so many people who were instrumental in making it possible for me to be here and so many people whose work and effort ensured my experience here was great. They are: my parents, mentors, friends, my professors (Profs. Udwani, Kerger, Mastrolia, Pirutinsky, Yan, Cui), career services staff (Diana and Josh), student services team (Erica, Jenny, Heather, Goldie) and everyone else who made this journey possible and amazing! Thank you 😊" — A***n Magnan, MAnalytics '26

Graduate Student Spotlight: A***n is taking his talents to QCells, a global clean energy and renewable technology company, where he will join as an Agentic AI Engineer. Congratulations, A***n — we can’t wait to see the impact you make!

🎓 Graduating Student Spotlight: Muyan Jiang, PhD IEOR ’26

When asked what UC Berkeley IEOR taught him that no textbook could, Muyan shared:

“UC Berkeley IEOR taught me how to think about messy, real-world systems where the problem is often not clearly defined. Beyond the theory in textbooks, I learned how to translate complex practical situations into models, make reasonable assumptions, and use data and analytics to guide decisions.”

For Muyan, one of the most meaningful parts of her IEOR experience was the community:

“A PhD can sometimes feel like a long and lonely marathon, but having supportive cohortmates made the journey much more manageable. I’m really grateful for their friendship and encouragement—they helped me navigate the challenges along the way, and I will miss that sense of camaraderie the most.

After graduation, Muyan is headed to Lingjun Investment as a Quant Researcher.

On April 29, members of the UC Berkeley IEOR Advisory Board gathered at the Grimes Engineering Center for a full-day meeting focused on departmental priorities, artificial intelligence, industry engagement and goals for the year ahead.

The program brought together faculty, board members, students and campus leaders for thoughtful discussion on IEOR’s evolving role in AI and its impact across industries. During an advisory board lightning round, Coleman Fung, CEO and co-founder of Blue Goji; Tim Jacobs, vice president of applied AI and machine learning at Walmart; and Peter Wei, chief operating officer of Rocket Software, shared insights into how AI is shaping innovation within their organizations.

The afternoon featured an update from Mark Asta, dean of the College of Engineering, as well as student and research perspectives from undergraduate Kenny Wongchamcharoen and doctoral student Grace He.

A special thank you to Advisory Board Chair Carolyn Yee for her leadership, and to all of our board members for their continued partnership, expertise and commitment to Berkeley IEOR’s future.

“What do IEOR graduates do?”

In her commencement remarks, Department Citation Recipient Helen Ton Chang, BS IEOR ’26, offered a clear and powerful answer: IEOR graduates make things better.

Helen reflected on how industrial engineering and operations research helps graduates understand, model, and improve complex real-world systems through mathematical modeling, simulation, optimization, and data analysis. From strengthening semiconductor supply chains and improving manufacturing operations to advancing safety, healthcare, consulting, emerging technologies, and the everyday systems people rely on, IEOR graduates are prepared to lead with both technical excellence and purpose.

Her message to the Class of 2026 was a proud reminder of the impact Berkeley IEOR graduates are equipped to make: solving problems, reaching optimal decisions, and improving the well-being of the communities they serve.
