Berkeley's aesthetic during the summer = 🌞🫰📸

Whether it’s a stroll down the scenic paths, enjoying the change of pace on a much quieter Telegraph Ave, or soaking in golden hour at the top of the Fire Trails, there’s something special about campus this time of year.

Swipe to learn about DeCals, a unique program where your peers create and teach the coursework! 📚

Fun fact: DeCals were first developed at UC Berkeley, thanks to student advocacy, and have inspired similar programs across the country. 💫

“If I could talk to my freshman-year self, I’d tell her: You can do this. You belong here. I spent so much of that first year drowning in self-doubt, constantly feeling like everyone else had something I lacked. I’d remind myself that my voice matters, that I don’t need to shrink myself to make others comfortable. But now, I’ve learned that standing out isn’t something to fear — it’s something to own. Today, I carry myself with the courage to lead with conviction, and I am grateful UC Berkeley has aided me in that process.”
Daniela Castellanos | Gender and Women’s Studies major | Class of 2025

Three years after being admitted to UC Berkeley, Castellanos has now graduated from the No. 1 public university with plans to attend law school — thanks in part to her involvement with (Latine Pre-Law Society), a student organization that provides a professional, supportive network within the Latinx community in the legal field and empowers members to pursue a legal education or career.

“I started taking gender and women’s studies classes, and I loved them all. My world turned completely upside down, a full 180. I thought, ‘This makes so much sense; words are finally being put onto my experiences and what I have seen.’ I felt anger inside of me for a lot of things, and these classes put words and understanding to that. That is what I wanted to know: Who is missing from history? ...I ended up deciding to do law because I realized that was a way I could implement [my learnings] in a direct way, and I wanted to be there for people’s crisis situations. I really wanted to get involved in domestic violence work or sexual violence advocacy.”

"I got rejected from all the colleges I applied to during my senior year of high school. It was a big shock to me, and not something I had planned for. I thought I could start at community college for a bit, but it wasn’t something I really wanted to do because this was around the height of the COVID lockdown era, and I was kind of tired of sitting on Zoom in school.

Ultimately, I decided that I wanted to take some time and work...I spent three months in the Mojave Desert working on a trail crew with the Student Conservation Association...We didn’t have any electricity in the field, so I'd write my admissions essays in a journal and then, during my days off, go to McDonald's to type them up because their WiFi was better than the public library's.

I hadn’t even applied to Berkeley during my first round of applications, but I feel so lucky to be here now, especially since the programs are really great." - Steven Zeng, Environmental Economics and Policy major at

“When we provide students with the support they need, we give them the opportunity of equal access — access to knowledge, the highest form of currency on any campus,” says Carmen Varela, Disabled Students Program executive director.

Originally launched in 1970 with a U.S. Department of Education grant, the Disabled Students Program at Berkeley serves around 5,500 students. DSP now has a new home at Dwinelle Annex, a building which has been renovated to feature sensory-friendly, accessible spaces for relaxation, offices for disability specialists to meet with students, and much more.
