Welcome to the Master of Engineering Class of 2027!

A few days ago, the incoming MEng class officially began the program with orientation, where students met their peers, participated in a team scavenger hunt, and put their critical-thinking skills into practice.

Ahead lies an intensive, year-long master’s program centered on real-world problem-solving, preparing these engineers to become the next generation of leaders and innovators in their fields.

Meet Angelina Zhang, a UC Berkeley MEng '26 graduate in EECS, as she shares her experience in the program:

"The MEng program has been an intense but incredibly rewarding year. One thing I’m proud of is learning how to turn technical ideas into real, practical impact through both engineering and teamwork. At 20, I completed my bachelor’s degree, and at 21, I completed my master’s degree at Berkeley. This journey taught me that growth happens one step at a time, and I’m grateful for the people, projects, and challenges that helped me get here."

Meet the UC Berkeley Master of Engineering (MEng) Capstone Team 204: Zaira, Yihua, and Karisma, who partnered with Starkey Hearing Technologies to explore the future of hearing aid innovation.

Their project set out to answer a compelling question: could hearing aids do more than support hearing by also measuring heart rate?

Working closely with Starkey, the team investigated whether in-ear microphones could capture cardiac acoustic signals from the ear canal and convert them into real-time heart rate measurements, bridging signal processing with wearable health technology.

This team is part of the MEng Capstone Partnership Program—a select cohort of industry collaborations supported by Berkeley Engineering faculty, career advisers, and the Fung Institute’s leadership throughout the nine-month project.
