We are honored to celebrate 🎉 Nuntehui Espinoza, this year’s student speaker representing the Berkeley Teacher Education Program (BTEP) at the Berkeley School of Education Commencement on Thursday, May 21 at Zellerbach Hall.

Nuntehui is a future mathematics educator whose teaching philosophy is rooted in imagination, humanization, equity, and deep care for the communities that shaped her. As a Mexican-American and Q***r woman teaching in communities that reflect her own upbringing, she reflects thoughtfully on identity, language, belonging, and the importance of creating classrooms where students can fully be themselves.

Drawing from Ethnic Studies, abolitionist thinking, and her experiences working with youth, Nuntehui believes education should cultivate imagination, critical thinking, dignity, and possibility. She writes about the importance of helping students “build their own meaning” and developing classrooms where young people are seen as intellectuals, capable of reaching high expectations when supported with care, structure, and humanity.

Nuntehui’s reflections remind us that teaching is not simply about content delivery — it is about relationships, hope, identity, inquiry, and believing in more just possibilities for education and for our students.

We are deeply proud to have Nuntehui representing BTEP and the future of public education at commencement this year. 💛💙

Congratulations to the BTEP Class of 2026. 🎓

The final post-thesis primal scream 😱 of the year.

With the completion of Round 2 of Master’s thesis presentations, our BTEP teacher candidates are officially done. After months of student teaching, inquiry, coursework, research, reflection, feedback, growth, and community, they now head toward graduation next week.

Every year, this moment becomes a collective release — a way to honor everything candidates have carried while becoming the educators they are striving to be.

Teacher education is intellectual, relational, emotional, joyful, difficult, and deeply human work.

And sometimes… it sounds exactly like this. 💛💙

Congratulations Cohort 8, BTEP Class of 2026.

Round 1 of Master’s thesis presentations: complete.

Every year, Kyle Beckham closes out his MA course with a collective primal scream — a moment to release everything candidates have been carrying through the program, the research process, student teaching, and the beautiful intensity of becoming a teacher.

Because sometimes teacher education is inquiry, reflection, scholarship, community…

…and sometimes it is screaming together in the courtyard. ❤️

Congratulations to our Cohort 9 BTEP teacher candidates on sharing their research and continuing to grow into the educators they are becoming.

“Teaching is an endeavor to be more fully human, to embody the fullness of human life in ourselves and our students.” 🍎

At BTEP, we believe teaching is relational, intellectual, joyful, and deeply rooted in community. Our teacher candidates learn to co-create classrooms where young people experience dignity, belonging, inquiry, and rigorous learning.

We believe becoming a teacher also means developing the courage to reflect honestly on one’s own practice, to lean into discomfort, and to continually grow alongside students, families, and communities.

We are proud to support educators committed to building a more just world alongside their students.

“Teaching is a craft that deepens through an intentional stance of inquiry over time.” 🍎

At BTEP, we prepare teachers who approach classrooms with curiosity, reflection, humility, and a commitment to continuous learning alongside young people and communities.

We believe transformative teaching also requires educators to critically examine their own practice — to lean into discomfort, reflect honestly on tensions and contradictions, and develop an inquiry stance toward their own growth.

Teaching is not simply about delivering content. It is a creative, intellectual, and relational practice that grows through inquiry, collaboration, and experience.

Cal’s Big Give is today. 💙💛✨

BTEP doesn’t just prepare teachers for graduation day. It helps build a lasting community of educators who continue learning, collaborating, and leading long after they leave the program.

Our recent Community of Practice gathering reminded us that alumni are a vital part of BTEP’s ongoing story. They return as workshop leaders, mentors, collaborators, and examples of what justice-oriented teaching can look like in practice.

Your support for Big Give 2026 helps sustain that ecosystem of growth, connection, and impact for current students, Cooperating Teachers, and alumni alike.

Big Give is TODAY. 🍎✨

BTEP prepares justice-oriented educators to create classrooms rooted in equity, care, and meaningful learning. Your support helps make that possible.

As one graduating teacher candidate shared:
“This program gave me more than just theoretical foundations and teaching skills; it gave me the courage to practice advocating for myself, to speak my truth, and to never forget the communities that shaped me… I leave BTEP more grounded in who I am and empowered to create the kind of learning opportunities that can change the world.”

That is what your gift supports: not just teacher training, but the development of educators who lead with integrity, humility, and deep commitment to young people and communities.

Today, every gift supports BTEP student fellowships and stipends for Cooperating Teachers. Every gift also brings us closer to unlocking $1,000 in matching funds.

Give today for Big Give 2026 and help us invest in the future of equitable public education. 💙💛
