Did you know that a Haas alum is one of the top civil rights attorneys in the nation?

John Burris, MBA 70, champions a world without discrimination and police brutality. He’s represented more than 1,000 victims of police misconduct, some of whom were high profile. He was also part of Rodney King’s legal team and helped him win a $3.8 million judgment.

“In high school, I founded an entrepreneurship competition to go beyond the science fair and spelling bee and let elementary school students show off skills and think outside the box.

Both my siblings came to Haas as transfer students. I knew that by coming to the Haas Global Management Program as a freshman, I would take on a lot more debt, and that was scary. The scholarships I’ve received have taken pressure off of my mom trying to put three kids through college on her own.

Financial support has not only made a huge difference for me, but helped relieve anxiety about her future. That's incredibly important to me.

During our first semester abroad, we visited Goldman Sachs and Apple. That was my first exposure to what the corporate world looks like. Haas conversations with influential businesspeople have been so valuable for figuring out how to pursue a career.

I’ve already had three internships—in tech, venture capital, and investment banking. Next summer, I'm excited to be working at a private equity firm that only
invests in software companies.

After school, I want to break into tech private equity or tech investment banking. Long term, I want to create my own company. That is one of my biggest goals in life. I'm trying to acquire all the industry knowledge I can so I can create new innovations with large-scale impact.” —Shefali Breitbach, BS 27

The original polygraph was invented in Berkeley in 1921 based on a blood pressure test. Yet despite vast technological advances, each new tool has proved unreliable at detecting when someone is lying. Using bran scans and machine learning, a team of researchers from Haas, UC Berkeley, and UCSF has confirmed empirically for the first time that what lie detectors pick up may not be falsehoods themselves—and has brought the field closer to a scientifically valid lie detector.

The team includes Sangil “Arthur” Lee, postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley’s Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute, Berkeley Haas professor Ming Hsu, and UCSF neurology professor Andrew Kayser.

Ever since people began trying to use machines to detect lies, they’ve met with frustration. When a new technique emerges—polygraphs, brain wave tests, magnetic resonance imaging—scientists assume better technology will solve the problem. Yet inevitably, hype gives way to skepticism, as each n...
