Aging and AGEISM – PRESENTATION RESCHEDULED
Next Monday the 25th!
Ageism - prejudice or discrimination on the grounds of a person's age. Is it a real thing? What is the truth about how older people are viewed? Are they/we “Seniors”? “Senior Citizens”? “Elders”? “Older adults”?
An upcoming presentation will address these and other concerns related to growing older in our society - Monday, March 25, 1:00-3:00 in the West Parish Congregational Church dining room. The presenter is Emily Berrill, an MSW Student at the University of Maine and an intern with the Maine Council on Aging and the Tri-State Learning Collaborative. A significant part of her research has been through interviews with older adults. Bethel’s Al Cressy was one interviewee; he spoke with Emily about how older adults felt they were represented in the health and human service professions and how aging is addressed in society.
After Emily’s presentation there will be an interactive portion of the program, with perspectives shared by audience members. Emily looks forward to hearing what reactions older people might have to the societal issues she has studied. Join us Monday, March 25 at 1:00. Light refreshments will be served. This program is sponsored by the Age-Friendly Community Initiative (AFCI); www.agefriendlybethel.org. If you are over 60 and a resident of an AFCI town, you may request a ride to this event (at least 3 days in advance): Neighbor-to-Neighbor Volunteer Driver Program, 824-4444.
