Learning from history to shape the future of military medicine! 🇺🇸

First-year USU medical and graduate nursing students participated in the annual Antietam Road March at Antietam National Battlefield. By studying Civil War combat care and battlefield evacuation, these future military medical officers gain essential leadership and triage lessons for today's operational environments.

Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Coast Guardsmen, and PHS Commissioned Corps Members from the Class of 2030 gathered on campus for the Commandant’s Cup. This high-intensity session brings future military medical leaders together to compete side-by-side in mixed-service teams.

The Lineup:
🏋️‍♂️ 90 lb Sled Drag & 40 lb Kettlebell Carries
🧘‍♂️ Plank Plate Slides & Pyramid Push-ups
🏃‍♂️ Team Laps & Walking Lunges
⏱️ Final Challenge: A last-person-standing plank competition

Events like these promote joint physical readiness, teamwork and esprit de corps.

The USU Graduate Education Office recently completed a two-week orientation, officially welcoming 23 new PhD students—including 3 MD/PhD candidates—across programs in Medical and Clinical Psychology, Neuroscience, Molecular and Cell Biology, Emerging Infectious Diseases, and Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics.

During the two packed weeks of workshops, briefings, and academic prep, MPS student 1LT John Ray Roberts and our 2026 Peer Mentors led small group discussions sharing personal stories of navigating academic and research hurdles, reminding new students that overcoming challenges is part of the process—and that campus resources are always here to help.

Orientation wrapped with "Our Collective Why," where students reflected on their motivations and hopes for grad school on individual puzzle pieces. Together, they assembled a beautiful custom puzzle painted by EID student Melissa Kallarakal, representing how their individual perspectives create one powerful mission.

From point-of-injury assessment and field pain management to casualty treatment and tactical evacuations, ACME prepares students to adapt, collaborate, and deliver tactical care effectively under high-pressure situations.

Dr. Schwartz, a USU Master of Public Health graduate, brings decades of distinguished military medicine leadership to head the nation's top public health organization.
