Another Commandant’s Cup in the books! 🏆

The USU SOM Class of 2029 took to the field for their 2nd Annual Commandant’s Cup. Future military physicians powered through a 15-station physical training circuit before facing off in a high-stakes branch relay and push-up competition to build grit and unmatched esprit de corps.

Congratulations to U.S. Army Col. (Dr.) Kevin R. Gillespie on being named acting Associate Dean for Dental Research at the USU Postgraduate Dental College!

Col. Gillespie will lead the effort to build a unified Tri-Service Dental Research Program, bringing together Army, Navy, and Air Force research capabilities to address shared military health priorities and directly support our Service Members.

Army Col. Kevin Gillespie is named acting associate dean for dental research at USU’s PDC to unite Tri-Service military dental research.

From creative crafts to hands-on health lessons, our volunteers spent the day teaching local kids how fun—and important—taking care of their health can be.

We are proud to share the official launch of the National Institute for Defense Health Cooperation (NIDHC)!

NIDHC brings together the National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health (NCDMPH), the Center for Global Health Engagement (CGHE), and the Defense Institute for Medical Operations (DIMO). NIDHC serves as a central hub for education, research, and collaboration in disaster medicine, global health engagement, and security cooperation across military health, defense agencies, and government partners.

USU establishes the National Institute for Defense Health Cooperation (NIDHC) to unify military medicine and global health readiness.

We are deeply grateful for the generosity of Drs. David and Shirley Polly and their commitment to advancing military medicine and education at USU.

Dr. Michael Oshiki (2nd from left) accepted the generous contribution from Dr. David Polly (center) on behalf of the USU Alumni Association, which includes support to establish a named Orthopedics lecture within the USU Department of Surgery.

USU President Dr. Jonathan Woodson recently visited the Battlefield Health and Trauma Research Institute at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston (Joint Base San Antonio). 

Joined by USU Postgraduate Dental College Executive Dean Dr. Drew Fallis, they met with military dental and combat casualty care researchers across Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU - SA), the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research, and the U.S. Air Force Dental Research & Consultation Service to explore joint medical innovations aimed at ensuring warfighter readiness and resilience.

This year’s USU Founders’ Day marked 54 years of “Caring for those in Harm’s Way.” From an engaging alumni panel reflecting on career trajectories, USU’s impact, and advice for the next generation of students, to capstone displays highlighting advanced research, the day showcased our mission in action.

We welcomed back the Class of 1986 to celebrate their 40th reunion and decades of leadership across the health system. A major highlight was the dedication of a lecture hall to the late Dr. Robert J.T. Joy. His pioneering work in military medical history continues to inform modern clinical care and readiness.

We are building on past lessons to prepare the next generation of health professionals for future challenges.

USU marks Founders’ Day 2026 with the Class of 1986’s 40th reunion and the dedication of the Dr. Robert J.T. Joy Lecture Hall.
