Lehigh University Law Professions Advising Exploring and preparing for a legal career and application to law school

From boardrooms to courtrooms, from government agencies to storefront offices, lawyers play a fundamental role in our society. The versatility of the Juris Doctor (JD) degree makes it difficult to describe a "typical" law practice. The integration, at Lehigh, of excellent teaching, sophisticated research, and dedication to leadership and service to others makes it an ideal setting in which to prepare for a legal career.

A Civil & Equal Rights Essay & Video Documentary Contest for College Students!

The PBA Civil & Equal Rights Committee, the PBA Young Lawyers Division, and the PBA Law-Related Education Committee are launching an annual essay and video documentary contest for Pennsylvania college students on the importance of state and local policies to the protection of civil and equal rights. Contest is open to all Pennsylvania residents who attend college. The Pennsylvania Bar Foundation will administer the contest funds.

ABOUT THE CONTEST …
Eligible college students will submit an essay or short video documentary analyzing a Pennsylvania state/local law or lawyer/judge implicating civil rights. Examples of topics include a biography or oral history of a trailblazing individual in the law such as a county’s first African-American judge, or an examination of a law, such as a history of the PA ERA law or a current local housing ordinance disproportionately affecting people of color. The top entrants will receive monetary prizes and will have their winning entries posted on the PBA website. They also will present their submissions at a future PBA meeting.

IMPORTANT DATES …
The deadline for essay and video submissions is March 15, 2015. Winners will be announced on April 15, 2015. Contest rules and format requirements can be found at www.pabar.org/public/committees/CIV01/essaycontest.asp.

Atty. Jasmine Rand, Esq., attorney for the Trayvon Martin family,
will present

S*xualizing Race, Gendering S*x: Stand Your Ground, Trayvon Martin, and White Female S*xuality in the Prosecution of Black Men

at Lehigh on

Thurs., Sept. 4, 2014
4:10pm
STEPS 101

A nearly all-white female jury found George Zimmerman not guilty for the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. What does this say about the role of identities and how they shape the life outcomes of marginal groups? This discussion will explore the matrix of oppression of race, gender, and sexuality in the historical lynching of black men and the contemporary prosecution of black males and masculinity in particular. The Trayvon Martin case forced our nation to examine our progress on racial equality, and though we have anti-lynching legislation, we must examine whether Stand Your Ground law bears a new strange fruit.
