Lehigh's engineering program has a long track record of ingenuity and success reaching all corners of the world. That all began with Lehigh's founding in 1865, when our multidisciplinary approach to education and research first started. Our engineers have embraced our entrepreneurial culture for well over 150 years, establishing a heritage of leadership and collaboration that still thrives today.

Here at Lehigh, we believe that engineering is driven by humanity, and our engineering students are encouraged to think holistically about societal challenges. It's a matter of perspective: Lehigh engineers work with their peers to understand issues from a wide viewpoint rather than one niche discipline. Today, we are among the most research-intensive engineering programs in the United States. We are committed to Lehigh's strategic vision and place particular emphasis on four of the world's grandest challenges:

-The expanding needs of health in the United States
-The interrelated issues of energy, the environment and our infrastructure
-The impact of globalization
-Post-industrial urban communities

At Lehigh today, engineering students are leaders on campus—in theater and music groups, in athletics and student government, and in fraternities and sororities. They are prepared to succeed generations of Lehigh engineers who have earned renown for their contributions not just to engineering, but also to business, law, medicine and education.

A big fish in a small pond. 🐟️ Keith Moored, a professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics in Lehigh University’s P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, was recently selected to join the Defense Science Study Group (DSSG), a highly selective program that connects leading academic researchers with U.S. national security challenges. Moored is one of just 18 academics selected from more than 150 nominated by universities across the country for the class of 2027-28. Lehigh researchers are studying how a newly observed interaction between gold and palladium could forge new paths in bio-based chemical manufacturing. Household products that use building-block chemicals derived from oil could instead be replaced with bio-sourced molecules from plants and algae. Professor Steven McIntosh and a member of his lab, Bohyeon Kim, a PhD student in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, explores how this new mechanism can aid in the effort. Back in June, the Lehigh Rocketry team competed in the world's largest student rocketry competition: 2026 International Rocket Engineering Competition (hosted by ESRA) in Midland, Texas. They took home a Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) Payload Challenge Honorable Mention for the technical excellence of its special robotic payload called LAIKA, named in honor of the first living animal to orbit the Earth.

"I'm so proud of these students and all they have accomplished over the past two years," says LURA’s faculty advisor, Terry Hart () ’68, teaching full professor of Lehigh University Mechanical Engineering, former astronaut, and founding director of the master's program.

With and , Lehigh Engineering has continued to care for the bridge by testing the steel suspender ropes in our Fritz Lab to confirm their residual strength and continued high performance.
