On Saturday, April 12, at Gettysburg College, art history seniors Emma Wright and Makena Smith presented their research at the 2025 Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Art History Symposium with professor Florencia San MartĂn in attendance.

Divided into six panels, the event included 20 presentations from students attending universities in the region, including Penn State, Bucknell University, and, of course, Lehigh University!

Emma's paper, "The Personal is Political: Charlotte Salomon’s 'Life?' or 'Theater?' as a Visual Response to Madness", adopted a feminist approach to reframe Salomon's paintings by relating them to recent studies on madness vis-à-vis German political instability in the 1940s. Makena's paper, "Female Athleticism: Does it Make You Uncomfortable?", departed from theories on feminism and media representation to ask the question of: Is the lack of female athleticism connected to the slow rise of female artists in the art world?

Congratulations, Emma and Makena, for your excellent and timely work!

Matthew, a Bryn Mawr native and architecture student with a passion for printmaking, creates work that explores memory, atmosphere, and emotional tone. These prints capture more than photos—they’re memories, feelings, and the way places linger in the mind. Don’t miss this chance to experience the beauty of fleeting moments through printmaking. See you there!

As the fall semester comes to a close, here’s a highlight from a class trip this past October. Florencia San Martin and her Global Contemporary Art (ART 221) class took a field trip to Philadelphia. They visited PAM and the Barnes Foundation. At the Philadelphia Museum of Art, they visited the Duchamp room and two exhibitions: "Begin Again: Repetition in Contemporary Art" and "What Times Are These?" The class also stopped at a few famous paintings from the collection, such as Cézanne's "The Large Bathers." At the Barnes, they visited the "Mickalene Thomas: All About Love."

Highlights from artist and professor closing reception for her Gradients of Growth exhibit.

Gradients of Growth investigates the question of what do birds see in our anthropocene climate. The abstract portal shapes in Deirdre Murphy's paintings are derived from the tree cavity nests found while walking in the woods of Rolling Hill Park during a residency at Lower Merion Conservancy outside Philadelphia. The print series titled, Contemporary Herbarium is based on Lehigh University’s Tremblay Herbarium collection. These monoprints take a hyperlocal look at East Coast pollinator species that act as hosts to feed the migratory birds, which continue to thrive despite the rising temperatures. The focus of Murphy’s studio practice is grounded in the ecology of hope rather than the grieving of extinction and the belief that through awareness we can work to heal and repair our warming earth. This exhibition was made possible by generous funding from Lehigh University’s CORE grant and Lower Merion Conservancy Artist Residency program.
