What is the latest in the federal civil rights litigation against UCLA?

At JFRG's recent event at Baruch College, Andrew Gould, Esq., Partner at Holtzman Vogel LLP, discussed the ongoing legal proceedings concerning antisemitism at UCLA, including allegations of discrimination, hostile campus environments, and failures of institutional accountability.

With federal civil rights protections at the center of these cases, the implications extend far beyond UCLA, raising important questions for Jewish faculty, students, and universities nationwide.

Three years after October 7th, how is this still happening at the University of California?

On October 7th, JCHAI, the Jewish faculty and staff association at UC Davis, was supposed to hold a gathering on campus. They had reserved and paid for the space weeks earlier. The university knew a protest was planned for the same place, and it promised in writing that their reservation would not be affected.

It was. About 40 masked protesters took over the space. Right in front of the Jewish table, they chanted “We love Hamas,” “Al-Qassam, you make us proud,” and “Kill another soldier.” Al-Qassam is the Hamas unit that led the October 7th massacre. UC police and campus leaders were there. It went on for more than an hour.

And it isn’t new. The same group did the same thing, on the same day, last year.

Jews are about 2% of Americans. A community that small depends on the people in charge to keep their promises. At UC Davis, they didn’t.

Jewish faculty, staff, and students deserve the same protection as everyone else. Please take one minute to write Chancellor Gary May at [email protected] and ask UC Davis to keep its promise.

Hope.
Hope for peace.
Hope for belonging.
Hope for coexistence.
Hope for safety in Israel...and the Diaspora.

Last night at UCLA, three years after October 7, students, faculty, and staff gathered to remember the lives taken and to stand with the hostages and their families. The evening closed with Hatikvah, "The Hope."

The vigil was respectful, solemn, and filled with love. For those of us who teach and work on campus, it was a reminder of what a university community can be: a place where people grieve together and show up for one another.

Thank you to Hillel at UCLA and the UCLA Jewish student groups who organized it with such care. Our students led the way. The world could use more of this.

On October 7, the third anniversary of the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust, masked demonstrators at UCLA's Bruin Plaza again chanted "Long live the intifada."

Many people hear these slogans and shrug. They sound like protest language. They aren't.

In under three minutes, this video pauses on each chant and explains what it means: "intifada," "from the river to the sea," "from Gaza to Beirut," "all our martyrs, we salute," and "we'll rise, Yafa, Haifa, Jerusalem."

What’s happening at UCLA doesn’t stop at UCLA.

JFRG brought together Jewish faculty, staff, and community members for a conversation about civil rights on campus, lessons from UCLA, and how stronger faculty networks can support Jewish communities nationwide.

The evening featured Andrew Gould, Esq., Partner at Holtzman Vogel LLP, counsel representing seven Jewish UCLA faculty members in the federal Title VII case. The conversation was moderated by Donna Gitter, Professor of Law at Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business, CUNY, alongside Matthew Davidson, Executive Director of JFRG.

This gathering was about more than one campus. It was about connection, education, and building a stronger national network for Jewish faculty.
